I gave your question a star.
Unfortunately, the fear of eternal damnation is one of the big motivators. That, combined with the promise of heaven for those who are good, make a powerful psychological combination. The terror factor has been popular in some religions for a long time. Keeps the rubes in line.
I can't address right or wrong, but I feel sorry for people who join a religion for those reasons. It's sad.
Okay, now I think I'll finish off the evening by going and reading a few Jonathan Edwards sermons. (... with some fava beans and a nice bottle of Chianti.)

I guess if that's what gets you there then fine but if you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior (no matter what the reason) you will not stay in fear of eternal torment very long. Jesus didn't die for you so you could fear but so you could find peace and love in angry, sad world and then upon death spend eternity in paradise.

If you buy into the concept that such a deity as described by those religions actually exists, then fear of eternal torment is the only rational response to such a horrible creature.
Luckily, it doesn't exist.

MY Friend try to understand the Big Bang theory and the Precambrian era.
IF you understand the scientific account of how life evolved here you will know their is no such thing as any god therefore negating any religion in its entirety. This basically means thing like the Koran, bible prophet Mohammad are all huge piles of BS

I think a lot of people worship out of fear, whether they can admit it to themselves or not.
Religion (particularly Christianity based) is based on a principle that basically states:
Love me, worship me, do what I say, or I will send you to Hell to be tortured forever.
I challenge someone to tell me differently.
Sure, there ARE a lot of good things about Christianity. Like love your fellow man. But the bottom line is worship me, or else!
Worship me or I will send you screaming, naked and on fire into the pits of Hell for enternal torment.
Ahhh. So loving.

Not one Christian follows Jesus Christ out of fear. How do you fear a gift which came from God? and promises eternal love? What torment? hell? I think your question is one to yourself.

Most of us are members or a certain faith becuse it's traditiona dn or part of heritage...
Other believe it gives them a sense of direction, a sense of belongingness, for inspiration and to find solace.
It doesn't really have anything to do with eternal torment...

I follow God because I love Him more than because I fear Him.

Jesus said, " "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him."
