Poodles where originally used as hunting dogs in water. They had the poofy thing on their head and ears to protect their heads from getting cold in icy water. same for the puffiness on their chests. to protect the heart. The puff on the tail was so their owners could tell the poodle found something when he wagged his tail. the hir around the paws was to keep those joints warm. so the whole puffy hairstyle is to keep some parts of the dogs warm so the can hunt at their best.
DUH!!!

Both breed are wonderful dogs. As far as being the smartest, well that depends on their owner and how they are trained.
My dad always said that a dog is only as smart as the person who is holding it's lead.

Well, if you search it on the net, Border Collies are considered the smartest breed, with Poodles being second. I'd have to agree with this, since I'm the owner of one pretty smart border collie :)
I have heard that the average dog, at full mental maturity has the mentality of a 4 yr old child, where a border collie actually has the mentality of a 7 yr old child. They are capable of some problem solving and self thinking, which is part of what makes them great herding dogs. They don't need micro management :)

I would have to say from personal experience that the Border Collie is the smartest if not one of the smartest dogs in the world. there are statistics about the most intelligent dogs, and I believe that Border Collies are right up there. I had a border collie, and she was unbelieveably intelligent. She was mostly human, but then most of my puies are. I am not saying that Poodles are stupid, I just believe that Border Collies are one of the most intelligent breeds out ther.

Border collies just because I know they're number 1 on the list of most intelligent breeds, but I think Poodles are also very smart.

I've had a border collie, and trained a poodle. They are both up there in the top five along with dachshunds and german shepards. I give a slight edge to the poodle. A good rule of thumb to judge how smart a breed is would be to see how many owners claim that breed to be stubborn. Stubborn means a dog is training you and not vica versa.

I've found border collies to be a lot more serious than the average poodle. They tend to get focused on a task and learn things very quickly. They enjoy learning and are trained very quickly given the right motivation. Sort of the genius of the dog world.
Poodles tend to be a little goofy, stubborn and flighty. They may be very smart but they are a little ADHD.

Border Collies because they are problem solvers.
Most sites and newer books say Border Collies are the smartest.

Border collies are generally accepted as the most intelligent and trainable breed. Standard poodles are pretty close, although the toys and minis are much further down the list.

Any of the so called 'working dogs' like border collies or shepards will be more intelligent than most other breeds.
