No. There are various hells discussed in the scriptures of both Hinduism and Buddhism, but none of them are eternal.

there is a place of torment. What is a non-literal place of torment. By your calculations no one should go to Heaven. Eternal bliss for 70 years etc. Jesus warned that people would mock damnation. 6 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

Yes there is. But its not eternal. You only go there if you committed sins and stay there for as long as your sins don't burn off you. Without a doubt, sins are a burden and when people don't choose the good ways of getting the sins' burden off them, then God has to get the burden off the people the hard way! And it is very painful. In the fiery fire of that hell, when your sins are being burnt in it, the pain of them finally getting off you must be very very painful. So in a way, you can say that the concept of Indian Hell is that people go in it to be purified of their sins, but THE HARD WAY! I am not saying that I would like it, it's just that Hell is more like a place for the people who won't understand and stop doing evil deeds but keep doing them. For those people, HELL'S THE PLACE! Plus, also do a deep thinking that God is all merciful, to all the creation God created, we are all God's kids. And also always remember that regardless of one's deeds, a parent never differentiate between giving love to the Parent's kids. so why would God? God is so merciful that even the committers of sin are still dear to God. And it's more like that when one goes to Hell, it's not eternal torture, but a place where sinners are purified, the hard way indeed and when they purified of their sins, all the hot fire and horrors they go through is because of the sins they committed, now they have to face the punishment, and when that happens, its not they who are burning, but rather their sins are burning away of which they feel the extreme pain of!

Actually, in Buddhism, there are "hell realms" which are merely ways of speaking of the obsessions that the ego and mind go through on the path of humanity.

Hell is a metaphor for a person living in hell here on earth. Why is it so hard for people to understand this?

NO. In the Vedic scriptures are described the different hellish planets where a sinful person goes, but even though some one my stay there for many years, is not eternal. Is like in in prison, the government doesn't want the criminal stay in jail forever, they want to be corrected. Hellish planets are for correcting the sinful person.

Not eternal torment, but you can take rebirth in a "hot hell" and the "cold hells" according to your karma and when you've burned (no pun) off your bad karma you take a "better" rebirth. Buddhist pov.

no there aren't places like hell in hinduism. we believe in reincarnation. a soul is reincarnated until it is washed away of the sins it that has committed. the sins are washed away by living life by obeying morals and ethics and doing good deeds; basically, living life as you were meant to (dharma). we also believe that prayer brings the soul closer to god so once the soul has reincarnated to a level of spiritual enlightenment, it becomes a part of god.
