I believe in Jesus was real. There is the bible which tells about Jesus's ministry. Jesus also was mention in documents written in the 1st century by Flavius Josephus, Tacitus, Suetonius and Pliny the Younger.

Of course he was a guy in history. the early christians are not the only people who mentioned him in history...he was also mentioned directly in Roman records- although, of course, the Romans did not confirm any of his miracles during the time he was alive. Im sure many of the people who were mentioned in the bible were in fact real people, as with many ancient texts (the Illiad, the epic of Gilgamesh, etc.)- but a lot of the details of their life may have been embellished or exageratted. Gosh, that STILL happens in modern writings about people...just not to such a liberal extent.
Sources which mention Jesus outside of the bible include the famous Tacitus, who is better known as a greek philosopher in Rome who was opposed to the barbaric gladitorial games:
Nero fastened the guilt [of starting the blaze] and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius [14-37] at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular

I do. The bible is the history of the lineage of Jesus Christ, from Noah to Mary and Joesph. It is filled with places that exist today, in exactly where the bible told us it was. There are hundreds of examples of archeology finds being discovered right now, that continue to support the bible history. And the events in the life of Jesus, and the Israeli people, fore told by the prophets, before Jesus' life, and today, are mathematically and incredibly accurate. Over three hundred items coming to past correctly, is impossible. But your bible is that correct.

Jesus was - as successive Popes have stated - a Jewish man. If he returned to life today, he would head straight for the nearest synagogue, because that's what would be familiar to him. The first Christians and the first churches did not exist until long after his death.

I think it is possible he never existed at all... there aren't any mention of him by historians until long after he was supposed to have lived and died. He probably existed, but I don't think we really know anything about the historic Jesus. If he did exist, most of what we know was probably just history's biggest game of "telephone."

i'm not sure, i'd need to do some research to have an opinion on it. right now i'm not opposed to the idea that he existed as a man. it'll be interesting to read the answers on this and see if anyone points to some non-bible evidence.

I suppose I could believe in the Historical Jesus. Its the mythological one I dont beleive in. Why? Well, there is scant evidence for his existence, except for a few mentions by historians that lived well after he died...and thus were not eye witness historians.
There is evidence outside of hte BIble that supports the fact that Jesus was a real person?? Thats news to me - please please please post some references or sources...

Jesus was almost certainly a genuine historical figure but as an atheist I obviously don't believe he was divine.
"Why or why not?"
Because there is a consensus amongst historians that he existed, and that is good enough for me.
