Here is my question is there any way he can obtain copies of his discharge certificate and others from the military? Contact Veteran Affairs. They can help you obtain duplicates for him. Next time he needs to take them with him when he leaves.

The VA will be able to help him obtain these and so will his former unit if you contact them. Any medals can be bought through a couple of links that I have included (or used to be able to). If he has his DD-214's he should be able to request copies of the certificates and awards, however he will most likely have to do this himself. His DD -214's are the most important thing though because they are his proof. If he doesn't have those he can get those from his unit, I don't believe the VA will have a copy of those. His medal list will be on his DD-214, so if you follow what's on there you should be able to get replacement medals.

The VA can get copies of all his records. They can also supply one set of replacement ribbons and medals. If any of the certificates were honorary ( Shellback, etc.), they may not replace them. You can contact Tiffany Publishing for those. They supply the military with those certificates. Also, if the certificates were from the unit he was in, they may have a record of them.

Contact your local congressman.Chances are,he knows his way around in Washington.
They love to do stuff like this,it's good for free press coverage, and he does work for you.
He earned the medals, he's proud of them, and so are we.

I am sure there are ways for him to get copies. It will be time consuming and probably paperwork to fill out- but it can be done. However, if you were wanting to do it for him or surprise him- it's a great thought- but impossible. Due to the privacy act they will only release his information to him.
