I have a Golden pup too! He will be a year old in July. They are just the most sweet, adorable, loving dogs ever. You just can't help but cuddle them - and, of course, they love to be cuddled. Just be very patient during these puppy months. They quickly learn, but you still must be tolerant, patient and loving. They do not respond to yelling or hitting (nor do most dogs). I took mine for training and he is doing brilliantly since, so I recommend that too.
As for names...
My Golden really is a blond dog, as opposed to the more red retrievers, and he reminded me of "California blonds". I also currently reside in California. Lastly, I've always adored the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes". Combining all three, I came up with the name, "Cal". It's simple, yes, but it really fits him. I can also call him "Cali" (or cal-ee) or even "Cali Cal". In other words, he had built in nicknames. :-) People like the name, so if it suits your dog and you like it, feel free to use it!
Have fun with your new pup!

I've always named my dogs from a theme.
Since a teenager I've named every dog I've had after a World Champion boxer. I've had (Nigel) Benn, (Frank) Bruno, Lewey (Based on Lennox Lewis), Jess (Willard - very long ago World Heavyweight Champ).
In later years my son wanted to name our last dog after his favourite footballer who's surname was Bentley so starts a new trend.
Dependant on your hobby or interests surnames always seem to me to be a sensible choice.
