My friend died young, and at his wake, the funeral home played a mix cd of songs that were evocative of my friend. Many were sentimental and soulful. But someone snuck Biz Markie's "Just a Friend (Baby You Got What I Need)"

Everytime that damn song came on we all fell out laughing. It was a sweet moment of joy in a time of agony. It ws a brilliant move by his sister to include that song.

What song(s) would you want played at your wake, funeral, or memorial? It can be sappy, funny, whistful, or whatever.

Me:

*Tear Jerker song: "One" sung by Mary J. Blige and U2

*Uplifting song: "Dirt Off Your Shoulders" by Jay-Z

*LOL song: "Sister Christian by Night Ranger (Motorin! What's your price for light?) - It's an inside joke with my friends because I love the movie "Boogie Nights" so much.

My favorite song of all time is Everlong by the Foo Fighters. I think that would be nice. Maybe I should think of a play list.

I had a boss I really liked who passed away under rather unusual circumstances about 6 years ago. He was a really fun loving guy who was openly gay. At his memorial service he had a mix cd of music, mostly from Broadway musicals. The songs were poignant and set a sober, but nice mood. When the eulogist got up he said that there was one more song that Rod wanted played and "I love the night life! I love to boogie!" came on. We all almost fell out of the pews. It was great!

"A Little Too Late" ~ Toby Keith
"Bitter End" ~ Dixie Chicks
"Already Gone" ~ The Eagles
"Whiskey On Ice" ~ Hank Williams Jr
"Play Dead" ~ Bjork
"Tin Cup Chalice" ~ Jimmy Buffett
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" ~ George Jones
"Only Make Believe" ~ Conway Twitty
"My Farewell Party" ~ Gene Watson
"Whose Sorry Now" ~ Connie Francis

And the all time #1 song I *must* have played at my funeral just because I have that twisted of a sense of humor is:

"The Worms Crawl In"

Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight and The Pips.
Why? I don't know, it's just one of my favorites.

I just went to a funeral yesterday and all they sung was religious music. Not real inspirational.

My family only plays religious music at funerals. Guess I'll be the first to change that....

That is truly awesome. I think people at funerals should be laughing and enjoying their memories of the person who passed.
