For those who plan on getting married in the future, what food do you like to have at your reception? For me when I plan on getting married, I'd just would like to have BBQ (nothing too fancy) like chicken, ribs, brisket, coleslaw, baked beans, and potato salad as well as pecan pie, apple pie, and peach pie and iced tea (choice of sweetened or unsweetened) with lemons. I am a Texan and BBQ is the king there and I love BBQ. What do you like to have to eat at your wedding reception besides that wedding cake and punch?

About alcohol, I would like for the guests to either BYOB or contribute to the reception. If they want to do that, it is their business.

Wow! Can I be on the invite list for that great feast? But I'll come only if you have a full open bar!
We had just a really traditional meal, a buffet - Baron of Beef, turkey and ham, lots of salads, marinated veggies, hot veggies, ovenroast potatoes, variety of desserts - cheesecakes featured. Had a full open bar, of course, since we were hosting the wedding guests.

I am from Tx too but I'm getting married in Ohio.

It will be upscale southern food. Like fried cornish game hens instead of fried turkey. Carved brisket on artisan bread. HTB's family usually has itallian or gourmet but if I'm having a Yank wedding I want my southern food. :)

Alcohol we were only going to have a limited bar with beer and wine but since HTB's family inists on having an open bar with liqour they are picking up the alcohol tab. Either way there would aboslutely have not been BYOB or a cash bar. I think those are unbelievably tacky and rude. We would have had no alcohol before doing something like that.

How Selfish! Wow. If you think that would be ok then you have a serious personality problem! Besides that sounds more like the shower. Why don't you hold off and figure out if you want to marry him but not marry him for the wedding gifts! Thats ridiculous! In fact I hope this guy knows what hes getting himself into! If you want the gifts more than him he needs to run.

A BBQ is a great idea. It creates a nice and relaxed atmosphere adn you don't have to worry about caterers and all that crap that comes with wedding reception. You could even ask your guests to bring along a plate of food or nibblies, just to help you out and maybe just supply some champagne for toasting. Whatever else your guests would like to drink they can bring along themselves. I like your idea, it just takes all the formalities, planning and expensiveness out of a wedding reception but can still be as beautiful.

Wedding receptions here in New York are a HUGE event. They often last several hours - meals are several courses - AFTER the cocktail hour, which features all kinds of finger foods. (If you can think of it, it can be done.)

If I deviate from that, I would be kicked outta the state. LOL!! Seriously though, it has to be a primarily Italian meal -a little pasta dish, a meat dish (either chicken or seafood of some kind), then a salad, then sweet, THEN the cake. We don't do punch.

Because our families are from different cultures (African American and Orthodox Jew) we have to keep it simple: salmon and chicken, with veggies and potatoes. We want our guests to be comfortable and able to enjoy their meal. We are buying our own alcohol (it's not that expensive) and our caterer will bar tend.

If that wasn't the case, and money was no object, we would have some really unique entrees paired with a fantastic wine.

FYI, no one's going to want to BYOB to a wedding. Imagine a crowd of people holding brown paper bags during your ceremony, worrying if their drink is going to get warm. Not cool. Also, people don't expect to pay at a wedding, so don't ask people to "contribute". I'm sure your future wife will have her own opinion about this subject.

I'm with you! I'm getting married in a few weeks and we are having a BBQ with all the fixins'. Just remember, if you do provide alcohol at your reception, and something happens, (heaven forbid) you may be held responsible. You might throw in some good ole corn on the cob! God bless you and congratulations and have a wonderful time!

Dude, sounds like you have it down! Best way to me sounds like make it a bring-a-dish celebration to make it easier on you! Make it a great big party with an open bar (where everyone must bring some form of alcahol or drink mix, or ice, or supply cups if they don't have that kind of cash)

Sounds like you have a great idea!

I didn't get to have a wedding or reception (we just did the courthouse thing) but you've given me a great idea for our one year anniversary "celebration" next summer!

Might wanna make it an indoor affair, however, if everyone will be dressed up.

I think your menu at this point is a WONDERFUL idea. First of all it is relatively inexpensive, completely edible, fun, easy to cook and not a lot of headache. Who doesnt like a good barbecue, well that doesnt have a stick up their butt anyway?! I am from Minnesota and this is what i would do for my reception to feed people. It also relaxes the atmosphere for a serious let down your hair party!

I live in Minnesota, and I also had a BBQ wedding in the summer. I don't remember exactly what we had, but it was BBQ brisket, beans, potato salad, cake, wine, and white grape juice (for the younger ones).
