I just read up on Napoleon, and was amazed that not only did the French army get stuck taking on the Russians like Hitler would later, they even got chased back until Paris surrendered (if I understood right). History isn't my strong point, and I tried to look it up on Wikipedia, but, well, has Russia actually been defeated in warfare?

Part of the answer lies in your definition of "Russia." The USSR lost the Cold War and the Afghan War. Russia has lost to the Japanese. In ancient times, Russia was made up of different tribes that were defeated by the Mongols, Cossacks, Huns, and Turks at one time or another. But in more modern times, the "scorched earth" policy of retreating and letting the bitter winter take its toll on the invaders has made Russia very successful in defending itself.

Totally lost everything no but taken heavy heavy losses of land yes. Against the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 it ended Russian expansion into the east. The Japanese were totally victorious. WW1 the Russian lines dissolved and were forced into a treaty losing lots of land to the Central Powers.

Only in small wars amongst themselves. The scorched earth policy has always helped Russia enormously. The French, Turks, Germans and Chinese were never able to compete. Only the Huns and the Cossacks ever seemed to be anything to worry about.
