I have always wondered why many people of different religions seem to put down people of other religions or belifs...such as when someone asked a question about Athiests and Christians many Athiests said christians were ignorant and another said atheists just grew up like not believing in Santa Clause.......don't you think people should just accept that others happen to believe otherwise? they said that Athiests were not ignorant but isn't it ignorant to say that all Christians and other religion people are ignorant or that maybe some Muslims, Christians etc are actually more grown up...
is it wrong to say those people are maybe ignorant than who they are talking about? why is it that people have to be judgmental or rude or more concieded.....I am not saying all Atheists are I am saying those people or the people who believe that

Many christians choose to ignore reality. In this they are ignorant.

In some cases this is just amusing. For example the bible gives two genealogies for Joseph. The bible clearly states that each is the true genealogy for Joseph. Unfortunately they are completely different. Some christians choose to ignore the reality of what the bible says and explain that one of them is the genealogy of Mary. This is ignorant but harmless.

On the other hand, the bible gives a primitive tribal explanation of creation (actually it gives two contradictory explanations which are both wrong). In this case, some christians want to insist that the biblical explanation be taught as if it were a scientific possibility. This is ignorant and it is in no way harmless.

I should note that many christians do not hold ignorant beliefs. They believe that what is important is the spirit of what Jesus taught and not the particular words of a particular scribe. On the other hand fundamentalists cannot accept this. If they were willing to keep their ignorant beliefs to themselves, I would have no problem with them. It is only when they wish to assert that we should all ignore reality and believe what they do that I have a problem.

Fondamentalism!!!
which is allways a problem because do not conceive comunication, opinion, reasoning......
you would in fact find more wise people among those who are mentally open and understanding the differences beliefs where they come from and why.
I am one case particolar, I grew up as a Crystian and I am now a buddhist practicioner. This does not mean I now do not believe Jesus was a realized Saint, I just do not believe he was the only one manifested on earth. And I am sure that Jesus never told I am the only one son of God... but his disceples believed that and builted up the Church on it.
Buddha also was a realized Saint and both teachings are for me important
I just integrate them and make my view of them, I also respect a lot Indian American and so on
You see is question of having an open mind which give space to the all beings to express and manifest according to the different cultures and circunstances.
One should be very careful in trying to convince others, usually one should make the step to search for the truth and not be pushed towards it.....

This is a very important matter, and from this depend peace in the world!!!!!!!

Thanxs for the question...

You seem to be very sincere in your question, so I'll do my best to give you a very sincere answer. Skeptics, such as myself, tend to be intellectuals and tend to need proof. The personality type of a skeptic will frequently be one that really enjoys a good debate and finds great sport in picking apart someone else's questions, answers, or proclamations if they don't stand up to a logical test.

On the other hand, some people are just mean whether they believe in a god or not. I try to be kind, but every once in a while I see something so ridiculous I feel compelled to create a scathing response. But when I see sincere and thoughtful questions from someone who truly wants an answer, I'll do my best to be nice. The people who are just trying to bait atheists or convert atheists don't necessarily earn a "nice" response.

I think you are right. Still it is their choice. We are all given choices, right or wrong, left or right, do we believe or not. All paths eventually lead to the end of the road, yet which way do you go? My beliefs? I believe in a deity with many faces, many names and CHOOSE to believe that eventually we will all be in a place of peace, the same one yet different to each person since each person has their own ideas of the end. I think you are only ignorant if you refuse to accept everyone for their differences or refuse to respect others beliefs without an open mind. To have knowledge is to have power and how you use that power is what makes you what you are.

Many of us atheists see most religions as harmful, particularly Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Why would we not want to rid the world of such evil?

We have to worry about religious people flying planes into buildings and trying to usher in Armageddon, let alone abusing the young and other defenseless people.

Your question is going to come back with alot of answers. You can only live and believe for yourself. If you are a Christian then pray for the closed minded. If you are not then don't worry about the rest of the world. You are only responsible for yourself and how you live. Someone told me one time that "God asked no man whether he will accept life. That is not the choice. You must take it. The only choice is how".
good luck in finding what you are looking for

My plea to Atheists:

"A danger sign of the lapse from true skepticism in to dogmatism is an inability to respect those who disagree."
— Dr. Leonard George
(some of us are becoming the very thing we complain about: rigid dogmatists, incapable of considering alternative viewpoints We have become arrogant praying to the gods of reason).

My plea to Believers:

"Where all think alike, none thinks very much."
— Walter Lippman
(i.e. dissent is healthy).

Because people have a great need to be right so much so that it makes them feel good to beat someone else down. T

If they yammer the loudest they hope that others won't read the other points of view.

This goes for everyone no matter the beliefs.

You are corrrect - people should be tolerant. But, for an explanation check out this passage from the bible:

DEUT 13:6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;

DEUT 13:7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;

DEUT 13:8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:

DEUT 13:9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

DEUT 13:10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

DEUT 13:11 And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

That kind of thinking is why there are so many problems in the world today!!!
