Hello. First you should relax because kids know when you are upset or nervous.
Play with him. Ask him what he likes to do and see what you can get out of his parents. Let them tell you their expectations and rules, etc... Respect their wishes and let them give numbers where they can be reached. If you have had any first aid experience, that would be a plus, in case something should happen.
I use to babysit all the time. I just played with them. They like to look at themselves in the mirror. Singing songs is good too. Ask the parents to bring his favorite toy. He may have a favorite video to watch too.
Ask about snacks. What you could give him etc....
Don't sweat it and just relax. You will be fine. Always call someone if you do not know something while you are babysitting. You can call your parents. I don't know if you are watching him at your house or theirs. Don't be afraid to call if you have any problems. They will respect you for it.

Make sure to look them straight in the eye like at an interview, but always keep an eye on the child. I work at a daycare plus have two of my own. Mother instincts kick in, and if they are getting into something they are not suppose to be quick to say "NO" and stick to it. Ask lots of questions about what his favorite stuff is and if hes allergic to anything. Take notes. Write down phone numbers in case of emergency and I guess just be responsible. But remember dont take your eyes off them for more than a minute. Kids are sneaky as hell. Good luck

Have you babysat older kids? Or is this your first-ever babysitting job? Did you take any babysitter classes through your city or local hospital? If the little boy is almost 3 (I have a 4-year-old son) ask him what toys are his favorite, does he have a favorite TV show or movie, what games he likes to play, etc. Just ask questions and follow the boy's que.

Wow! If you are nervous around other infants, I am not sure that babysitting is right for you. I mean, you would know that more than I would! But, if you have children you know that most children have to "warm up" to a new face!
Just don't force the child. Let the child come to you. Best of luck and I hope this turns out for the best for all of you.

bring a good friend along who can help
(asking the parents first)
smile alot and act interested in everything the child does - young kids thrive on attention and will love you if you give it to them. keep your conversations clear and simple so the child does not get bored.

Just find out what the kid likes. Then, make that your target. For example, if he likes a card series, buy him a deck of those cards, make it fun for him, this will make smiles on him, smailes on his parents. Trust me.

You might want to take that fear into consideration on your next job hunt.
