We have both. Rats are more interactive with people, which makes them more fun. Well-socialized rats love their human friends, and they show it, even preferring attention to food treats when given the choice (although they often manage to get both @ once). I've had friendly mice & recently lost the best, sweetest mouse I've ever known (her name was Depeche Mouse), but our current mice aren't very interactive with ppl-- in fact, 2 of them still act like they think we're going to eat them although we've had them for more than a year (and we're vegetarian).

Rats!

get a rat they are more playful, i think smarter, social, cleaner, not as smelly, cuter, and dont tend to bite as much.

I have a 4 month old female rat and she is so sweet and my brother has one of her sisters i would say a rat from my own experiences people say that females are the ones with all the energy and don't like to cuddle as much and my loves to cuddle with me she falls asleep on my lap when i am petting her (it is so cute! =) so get a rat just get get it from like petco or petsmart get it from a breeder or from one of the small one store pet shops near you thats what i did i got my in Michigan at a store called paws-n-claws they have the parents right at the store the people now how old they are and everything which is a good thing to know. so just becareful where you go to get your rat/mouse. and i have only had my rat for about 2 1/2 months now and we already have a strong bond she doesn't like when i leave for the weekend but my brother and mom and dad are still here. rats don't have the same life spand as mice or hamsters.

and on that hamster thing i wouldn't get one

Theyre both pretty cute, but I think rats make a better pet. First of all, rats do NOT stink way more than mice..even hamsters smell worse than rats. I have 2 rats and if I clean their cage every week, I cant smell them at all.. My friend had mice, I took one out and it peed on my hands..I had to wash my hands SEVERAL times before the smell came out.

Also theyre bigger so easier to hold on to. Rats are playful, funny creatures full of crazy antics and curiousity. Jack hannah referred to rats as "the dogs of the rodent world". I use that quote a lot because I find it so true. They're like little dogs that dont bark. They get bad press because of "sewer" rats, but thats from people who have never owned a rat in their life. Rat owners dont go fishing for their pets in some dirty sewer. We go to pet stores, and get clean rats, bred in captivity, who have never seen a sewer in their life. Theirs a big difference between wild rats and tame rats, but for some reason people dont realize that.. Theres a big difference between wild, and domestic ANYTHING, though. (for instance I love dogs, but I wouldnt try to turn a wild wolf into a lap dog..and I wouldnt bring home a sewer rat and stick it in a cage).

I love all animals, including mice, so if someone wants pet mice instead of pet rats, thats just fine with me, but my heart will always belong to the rats.

Actually they really don't have the same lifespan. Mice don't tend to live as long as rats. Mice (1-2 years) and rats (4-5 years). Personally I prefer rats! They are easier to handle and easier to interact with.

I would definitely go with a hamster, rather than a rat or a mouse. I have had a lot of experience with all three rodents, and I always adored hamsters. They are really cute and playful, and they live about 2-3 years. Rats are okay, and mice aren't as lovable as hamsters . So good luck!

RATS. i have 2 rats, and they are so cool!!! i also had a mouse(cat killed it). mice are hard to bond with and the males smell really bad. rats on the other hand absolutely love people after they get to no you. and they don't smell at all if u clean the cages 1-2 times a week. and rats can be trained, and learn there names.

good luck!!! :)

well i think you should get a rat if you want a bigger pet and a mice if you want a smaller pet that will stay small because a rat will grow to its full size in about 2 years

I am a proud owner of 3 rats and love each one equally. They are very smart and stay devoted to their owners. they show affection and are always wanting to play and cuddle. Mice just mostly try to hide and are always trying to escape and so hard to get a hold of. With my rats they come when they are called, are very easy to maintain and they just love you to death. They are such an awesome pet to own.

Rats: They are more playful and can get attached to you. And are really affectionate. And they live longer. Mice are cute but you wouldn't cuddle one because they are too small and you can lose them.
