Chocolate is toxic to dogs. It isn't a matter of allergies. 4 ounces can kill a medium sized dog. Call your vet right now.

it isnt exactly good for them. According to what I found below I would definitely say not to give it to them, to create a habit of doing this. Read the site below, it tells you more info on it. I have never had this happen to any of my dogs. : ) But then when I read that it isnt safe, I quit giving it to them.

"Clinical Signs
Xanthines affect the nervous system, cardiovascular system and peripheral nerves. It has a diuretic effect as well.

Clinical signs:

Hyper excitability
Hyper irritability
Increased heart rate
Restlessness
Increased urination
Muscle tremors
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Treatment

There is no specific antidote for this poisoning. And the half life of the toxin is 17.5 hours in dogs. Induce vomiting in the first 1-2 hours if the quantity is unknown. Administering activated charcoal may inhibit absorption of the toxin. An anticonvulsant might be indicated if neurological signs are present and needs to be controlled. Oxygen therapy, intravenous medications, and fluids might be needed to protect the heart.

Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration.

If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate contact your Vet immediately! They can help you determine the the proper treatment for your pet."

"The problem, according to veterinary experts, is that eating a speck of chocolate leads a dog to crave more. It can mean that your dog will jump at a opportunity to get any type of chocolate, not knowing that certain chocolates are more lethal than other types. Larger amounts of chocolate, particularly of the most toxic type, can bring about epileptic seizures in some dogs, and in all dogs, can kill....Chocolate contains theobromine, which increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs..... Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting. This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death. If a 50-pound dog eats a teaspoonful of milk chocolate, it's not going to cause serious problems. However, if that same dog gorges himself on a two-layer chocolate cake, his stomach will feel more than upset and soon it's likely he'll be vomiting or experiencing diarrhea...."

The problem is not so much that dogs are allergic to chocolate, it's the caffeine and sugar in the chocolate that raises their heartbeat, blood pressure, etc. (just like it does in us). However, dogs in general are a lot smaller than we are, so it affects them more easily. My German Shepard are a whole batch of chocolate cookies, but since he weighed about 100 pounds, he was ok... however if a chihuahua ate the same amount, it could mean death.

Just watch your dog for a few hours, he may get a bit hyper, but if he is big enough, should make it through just fine.

He may also get a bit of diarrhea, so make sure you take him for his walk!

If 1 or to 2 days pass and nothing happened to him he will be fine and is not allergic but if he has any kind of reaction it could be because of the chocolate and he might be allergic so take him to a vet.
But I feed my dogs chocolate sometimes and nothing happens to them. So if your dog is not allergic. It's not bad to feed your dogs a bit of chocolate. One more you said your dog ate a whole lot of chocolate cake so maybe you should still take him to a vet.

All chocolate contains at least some theobromine which is toxic to dogs. What most fail to understand is that theobromine has an accumulative effect in dogs, and while a small amount of chocolate seems to have no effect on the dog, over time and ingesting chocolate time after time that small amount of chocolate can become enough to be fatal.

Dogs should not eat chocolate. Some have severe reactions (including death) but some dogs have more minor reactions. If your dog seems ok, he may be alright in general but my guess is that he may get a really bad case of diarhea or vomit. Keep an eye on him and if anything about him seems even slightly weird, get him to a vet asap. In addition, I'd call the vet anyway to see their take on the situation.

How much does your dog weigh? That is very important when figuring out if it will affect your dog. It also depends what kind of chocolate the chocolate cake was.

Call your vet and tell them what happened. They know your dog, and they'll know if your dog will die or not. I wouldn't take any chances.

well, chocolate is really not good for any types of dogs.. i guess it just depends on how lucky they are... and it sounds like your dog got pretty lucky since you said it ate a whole chocolate cake.. it could've turned out bad but i don't think chocolate is a certain allergy for only some dogs.
