Both these should be in the $8 - $10 range.

Rosemount Estate Diamond Label Shiraz
A delicious aroma of warm, spicy liquorice and brambly berry fruit is interwoven with savoury American oak. The palate is richly textured with well defined, ripe blackberry fruit flavours, soft generous tannins and a long, rich finish.

Smart set may snub it, but pinot grigio's popular

Pinot grigio, the light and lively wine from northern Italy, gets little respect from wine critics. Jancis Robinson, queen of British wine writers, dismisses the entire genre in her Oxford Companion to Wine as "a sea of reasonably undistinguished dry white with low aroma and noticeable acidity."

Tasting notes:
Recommended:

• 2002 Danzante Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, IGT: citrus and apricot aromas and flavors, crisp, medium-bodied, flavorful; $8.

• 2003 Banfi 'Le Rime' Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, IGT: lushly fruity, melons and lemons, light-bodied, spicy, dry but rich; $9.

• 2003 Sartori di Verona Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, IGT: light, delicate lemon, lime and kiwi flavors; crisp; $9.

• 2002 San Giuseppe Pinot Grigio, Veneto, IGT: lemons and limes, medium body, crisp; $10.

• 2002 Casaras Pinot Grigio delle Venezie, IGT: crisp, light, minerally, dry; $7.

• 2002 Bella Sera Pinot Grigio delle Venezie: pale green hue, crisp and tart, with white grapefruit flavors; $8.

It really depends on your personal taste. If you live in a wine producing state, you should visit a winery. There also might be stores that do wine tastings in your area. This allows you to find out what you like and what you don't. If you can't find anywhere to try wines, you could have a party and have everybody bring a different wine.

Beginners often like sweeter blush wines like white zinfandel. These are usually the cheapest wines, too.

Once you get used to drinking wine you will probably not like these any more and you will start to like dry (the opposite of sweet) wines instead. An inexpensive brand that is generally drinkable is Yellow Tail. I haven't tried Black Box, but a lot of my family members like that. You probably want to stay away from the cheapest boxed wines though (like Franzia).

In the end, only you can decide which wines taste good!

Oh, and one more thing - consider buying "Wine for Dummies" or checking it out from your local library if you want to learn more about wine - it's full of helpful tips!

Wine tasting is so subjective, what you might find enjoyable, I might dislike and vice versa. I am a sucker for artisan wines, and I find that McManis Family Vineyards make some excellent wines, and they are $9.99 at Beverages and More. They make a wide variety of wines whites and reds. Personally my favorite is their Petite Sirah...mm-mmm tasty goodness.

Enjoy your wine!

If you like a nice white, Robert Mondavi's Fume Blanc is nice. It's in a frosted glass bottle and is only maybe $12.

I really like a white called Estancia Pinot Grigio. It has a nice light flavor and a great aftertaste.
