Liability. In case you cause an accident this part of your auto insurance will pay for the other persons damages. I don't recommend getting just the minimum coverage though because you are just asking for trouble. Alot of things are " not covered" after an accident if you have just minimum coverage like rental cars, some medical expenses, etc.
