Yes, I do, I've also learned that it's more appropriate to use "many" or "much," rather than "a lot," a least when it comes to writing papers for school.

Well, you have written a 'run-on' sentence. I find when I am typing a lot, that often I simply miss the space bar and 'alot' is produced. Relax, there are worse things in life than a mere typo. Still, it is a courtesy to do your best to write with correct punctuation and spelling, so your reader can understand you completely.

I know.
The reason: My English teachers from grade school up until high school kept telling me so. Even my English professor in college told me too.

Yeah this one really annoys a lot of english teachers. Especially when it is in an essay or a formal paper.

Yes. I had a teacher that put the "A" in one corner of the board and the "lot" in the other corner. I think she screamed about it once and I'll never forget. All year the "a lot" was on the board.

So is "a little". Just tell them that.
Laziness rules all, so we will probably end up changing the dictionary soon so that "alot" will be accepted.
