I am thinking about buying a used police car (1997 Lumina) with 70,000 miles on it. I think it is for sale for $2,000. I am not sure whether it is a good idea to by an ex cop car. My buddy told me that the cops probably did a lot of idleing and starting/stopping the engine. He said starting/stopping a lot is one of the biggest wear and tear on a car because of the engine not recieving oil on start up for a few moments. Basically I would just like to know if it is worth it or not to go ahead and get it. Thanks.

Good & Bad. I've seen many happy buyers of former cop cars. Everything is built for extreme use. The fleet is always maintained. Most have had cosmetic work. That was the good. The bad? Too much money. Cop cars go for cheap. The dealer you are shopping at paid $500. Quadruple the money. Not bad. ALSO!!!!!!!! Most cop cars have high mileage. 70,000 is low. I'm suspicious. If you gotta have it offer $1200 and you'll own it fast.

They also have it checked anytime anything is wrong with it, and fixed, can't have the cops breaking down because the car had a belt go out, or a tranny slipping and you know all aspects of service needed was indeed taken care of. At a dealer, or a person you have no idea either of how they drove, or if they idled allot. At least in this case you know the maintenance was done.

Ok so my husband is a police officer. The do get a lot of wear and tear. Mostly because they are constantly going, one shift parks it and the next one takes off in it. However, they have excellent mechanics that keep them in great working condition. A bigger concern might be cleanliness. I'm not sure how they are selling it to you, but those back seats are horribly dirty. There is not enough antibacterial stuff out there to clean it. I would take the money and get a different car.

DONT do it---Worst abused vehicle on the road. Starting and taking off at floor board speeds---braking hard and at high speeds, In and out of seats 5 times more than regular uses-
and you can bet they are getting rid of it because of high maintance costs. Worsts vehicle you could buy in my estimation. I have owned 80 vehicles.

They beat the she-at out of them...no, take that $2000, and put it towards a decent 1-owner used car.

I have friends who are cops, and they tell me they run them into the ground.
