Are you missing the desktop all the time or has it just happened this one time? What I'm trying to figure out is if your explorer.exe process is running on your system. Please try bringing up the task manager and verify that it is or isn't running so we can troubleshoot further.

1) Launching TaskManager:

2) Switch to the Processes tab and sort by Image Name

3) Look for "explorer.exe" in the list.

If "explorer.exe" is not running, try running it manually and we can troubleshoot more as a follow up.

1) Launch Task Manager (if you closed it already)

2) Click the "Applications" tab

3) Click the "New Tasks..." button

4) Enter "Explorer.exe" in the Open box and hit "OK".

This should bring up the desktop and hopefully your start menu.

If the explorer.exe process seems to be the problem and it doesn't come up automatically, we'll need to do some more research.

Try bumping your cursor against all 4 sides of the screen, sometimes you can mistakenly move the task bar to another side. This is done by left clicking on the task bar and holding the mouse button while you reposition the bar. Hope this helps. If all else fails, press Ctrl-Alt-Del, all at once, this will bring up task manager, thus allowing you more options.
