I know that most of the ads in my newspaper are English. But there is one that sticks out from the rst. It is for a in home care service. It seems that every other day they change from English one day to Spanish the next.

my father says they do it becuase my area has a lot of illegals here and to appeal to them. is he right? Does this mean one day I'll be reading the paper and will the same ad in both English and Spanish in the same paper for exact same business? How bad of a problem is this in the bigger cities of our nation? Or are people not noticing it becuase it's subtle?

Actually it is good business practice. You reach more people who may want or need their services. Legal or illegal everyone needs the same services.

I live in a metropolitan area where I see advertisements in six different languages! Certain areas of town tend to have a predominant language because that is the predominant clientele. Lots of stores and churches have multilingual postings.

I just got used to it. It crept in slowly until it became normal.

It's not that subtle. That's what I'm talking about! Everybody else that comes to this country has to go through the process and learn English. But not the Latinos we make everything convenient for them. We put Spanish speaking teachers in the classrooms. Our signs and instructions are in English and Spanish. All recordings of businesses have English and Spanish. Most big businesses want Bi-lingual employees.

LOOK OUT! When they learn English and we do't know Spanish they'll take over. They'll be able to speak a language we don't know. Let's thank our Politicians.

I don't think so. Personally if I see an ad in English AND Spanish I won't go there.

We have tons of illegals here. While I'm sure there are plenty of LEGAL Spanish speakers that would go to places that advertise in Spanish, I will not support business that caters to the illegals. I take my business elsewhere. That is my right as a consumer!

We have a local car wash that has signs up in Spanish and they hire illegals. Last time I went there was before May 1, 2006. They were closed when the illegals were protesting for their "rights." They were also closed May 1, 2007.

I've got no problem with advertisers marketing their products to Spanish speaking customers. we live in a capitalist society, that's the American way. I do have a problem with public schools teaching classes in Spanish other than Spanish classes. Learn English, then learn everything else in English. I get that newly arrived immigrants may not know our language well, but they should make an effort to assimilate as quickly as possible.

America will in the not too distant future, have a Hispanic population that will match and eventually exceed the present majority of people of British, German, Dutch, Scandinavian (and other 'white') people. However, I think that English will still prevail, simply because it is the most widely spoken language in the world. But Spanish will be be a widely spoken second language in the USA, (it already is!) So get used to it! Well, those are my thoughts, anyway.

Look at it this way;

America has a large, mostly legal, Spanish speaking population. They speak and understand english well enough to get along but spanish is still their native tongue. All of these people work and, believe it or not, they have disposable income to buy things.

Now say you're a businessman in, oh, anytown, USA and you sell something or other. And you know that the spanish speaking population in your community has several million to spend and advertising in spanish would double your profits, would you advertise and make money, or ***** about them mexicans while your competition drives you out of business?

To "Ray C:"

You seem to be having some trouble with your English, so are you illegal? As a native speaker, let me help you get your "point" out in a comprehensible way. For example, you could have written: "No, because if you cannot understand English, you are probably an illegal immigrant, as that is one of the terms of being a legal citizen. We must stop catering to these criminals. Enforce our laws and deport illegals!"

Now that all of us "English speakers" understand what you are trying to say, let me respond.

1. Just because one prefers to speak in another language, it does not follow that they cannot understand English. For God sakes - immigrants are giving up their culture and history to come and work in the American economy! Let them speak whatever language they choose on their free time.

2. An illegal immigrant is NOT a criminal. Immigration violations are subject to civil penalties, not criminal ones.

3. To all of you who were lucky enough to be born here: YOU DON'T SIMPLY DESERVE TO HAVE BETTER OPPORTUNITIES THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD. You were just plain lucky that someone else (the country's forefathers) fought a revolution on your behalf and that someone else (your mother) happened to give birth to you on American soil. Take that into consideration when you choose to take out your nativist frustrations on immigrants that suffer in ways you will NEVER know.

If I lived in a city, and I had something for sale, I would advertise in whatever way necessary to sell the product. Is this a free country, or not? If I think putting an ad in Latvian would attract people, isn't that my business? And if you hate people who advertise in Latvian, that's certainly your business. Please don't come to my shop.

Advertisers are going to do whatever they need to do to drive business and make money. Sure, we all complain about the immigration problem. But the bottom line is that we are a country of hypocrites. We'll complain about it over the dinner table tonight, but tomorrow we'll go into our jobs and target those very people we protest because we know they have money and we have a product. It's a nasty cycle.

Why do you feel like this is a problem? I don't see the problem with posting ads in Spanish if it is targeted to a certain group of people. It's just advertising. Also I noticed you say there are a lot of illegals in your area. Just because people speak Spanish doesn't mean they are illegals.
