Southern Baptists are that...because they broke from the Northern Baptists over slavery...they thought slavery to be ordained by God....a stance that they just apologized for in 1995! Southern Baptists are the largest protestant denomination in the country and are quite divisive, intollerant and quite creepy.

In the past years at their convention, they have adopted resolutions to
"evangelize the jews"
"declare homosexuality to be an abomination, in contradiction to God's will"

They were wrong about slavery until 1995...they are wrong about other social issues as well...and will probably take another 100 years before they admit it.

They, however are a force to be recogned with...Richard Land, the former president of the Southern Baptist Convention is an advisor to President Bush...very scary.

Your thoughts?

Not all but most. They don't hate blacks. They do believe in segregation. They're nuts about jews, though. Totally ga-ga. Baptists are absolutely fanatical supporters of Israel - and that has played quite a role in the Bush administration.

No. In fact, ironically enough, just about every southern baptist that I know is black. But that is besides the point. I think that if you are encountering an issue where you feel like you are being discriminated with, then you should probably look for another church.

BUT, I want to warn you that if you are looking for a church, a denomination, that says that homosexuality is NOT a contradiction to God's will, you will be looking for a very long time. Just about every church doctrine that I've read says that they do not condone homosexual behavior. However most churches and people have the adopted mentality that they are not qualified to judge others, that is God's job, and that the point of religion is to love each other as God loves us. So, while they may not condone it, or believe that it is right, they will not shun someone because of it either.

Your statements are too broad and sweeping. You are making unfair generalizations.

I'm not a Baptist by the way, but it's wrong that you said "they were against slavery until 1995." Just because they issued an official apology that year didn't mean that all the years prior they were pro-slavery!

And are you not aware that there are huge numbers of black Southern Baptists?

I'm not a Southern Baptist, and I generally disagree with their theology, but I do live in an area where they are very prevalent. I've met many of them personally, and can honestly say that they're not all racist. Most of them that I've met, in fact, are not, and some (but not all) have people of varying races in their congregations.

No they aren't. Also, Judaism is not a race, but a religion, and homosexuality is not a race either. I am also sure that you would not have found any pro-slavery SB's in 1994. You have painted a very misleading picture of these people, sort of like a racist would do.

No.
What our ancestors did before we were born cannot and should not be put upon our shoulders.
I am sorry for what they did, but I will not apologize for their behavior, because I had nothing to do with it.
I do not mean to sound rude, but I did nothing wrong. I love people of every race and creed. There may be some that I dislike the way they behave, but it has nothing to do with their origin.

You used present tense, "Southern Baptist ARE racist, but then said they apologized in 1995. Get your tenses straight.
