Purchase a beginner's guitar chord book having instructions in tuning and playing the instrument, which will include basic music theory and bunches of chords.

Work on the exercises diligently and soon you'll be ready to play the few song exercises in the back of the book.
But first, you must learn chords--lots of chords and their progressions.

There are habits to form in guitar playing that may be bad or good. Since you don't want a guitar instructor you'll have to work on the habits you form, hoping they are good ones to keep.

Once you get your calluses thickened you can be on your way to guitar expertise. Keep practicing every day because you won't be a player immediately. It takes years to play proficiently.

It's kind of hard to tell you how to play the guitar here, it's too involved. What I would advise you to do is go to the Guitar Center or Sam Ash, Sam seems to have more books, tell the clerk what style that you want to play and ask him to recommend a good method book, also get a book on guitar cords. there aren't many places on the net that teach you for free, if you taught would you want to teach for free. There's one on the web that's suppose to be pretty good. Its called Bill Brutal On line Video Guitar lessons. Most of the others will get you started and then want you to buy their videos, not too much today is for free, there's always some kind of gimmick. Get the book and see how you do with that, and so you won't get bored try the cord book, you need to get callouses on your fingers, and get the muscles on your hand ready, most people don't realize how painful guitar playing it until they start it, but with time and daily practice you'll see it will all start to come together, it takes about a month of daily playing to develop callouses. Try to follow the rules of technique, so that later on you won't have to go back and correct bad habits, I tell everyone the same thing, make sure that that left hand thumb is in the middle of the back of the guitar neck it will make it easier later when you want speed and have to Barr cords and make complicated cords. Make sure that you get a book that has a Cd in the back, that way you can check if your doing things correctly. If your daring, (after you get the basics from book one) try a book called acoustic it's for fingerstyle playing and has songs like Tears in Heaven in notation and tabs and it's not that hard, Hal Leonard puts it out. Hope some of this stuff helped, good luck !!!!!!!
