I need to know if you're adults or children and what kinds of things you like.
Just of the top, I'd say start at Battery Park City way downtown and walk around. Take the Staten Island ferry for cheap or a circle line tour (a boat ride) if you have money.
Walk up to the WTC memorial site, check out the Woolworth building and the old Trinity church at Rector St. and Broadway, take a subway or bus up to Prince St., explore Soho to the west if you like galleries and fashion, head SE a little to check out Little Italy, then head NW to the
VIllage. Especially check out the old side streets around Seventh Avenue between Sheridan Square and Houston St.
Then take a bus uptown to central park. If you've got kids, go to the petting zoo, and everyone should check out the Museum of Natural History. Kids might not enjoy the Met as much as adults, depending on their ages. Stroll NW through Central park and when you get hungry walk over to Broadway, say in the 60's, 70's and 80's in the Upper West side for a funky restaurant. If you've got money check out a play or look for free concerts in the park. There's always so much going onto watch in Central park you could spend the whole day there. But don't. Go up to the top of the Empirre State Building for a view of the night, but expect a wait & try to get a ticket in advance. For a cheaper alterrnative ride the train that goes over the Manhattan bridge or the 7 train coming towards Manhattan from Queens. If it's hot, walk by the Hudson River where there's parks or take the kids for a splash in a city pool if you want a real treat. Please send me a slice from 8th St. I miss NYC

One day just isn't enough to see and do everything! I was just there with my daughter on our first overnight (we're across the river in jersey, so go in a lot) and we spent a lot of time around fifth avenue (st. pat's cathedral, american girl place, rockefeller center, top of the rock) but we also did central park, too. If you are there during a week day, the empire state building is a good choice, but so is M&M world, hard rock cafe, little italy and chinatown. there's just so much to see and do! check out www.nycvisit.com and www.iloveny.com and you can research some stuff that interests you ~ musuems, parks, restaurants, etc. Plan on going back, it's a blast!
