By the styling or the age.
The Laguna I introduced in late 1993, and discontinued in 2000. It was quite curved, in a muscular sort of way - and the estate had a very vertical rear screen, with tall slim lamp units extending up either side of the rear screen to almost the roof height. Also, the rear-most side glass of the estate is separated from the door glass by quite a broad body pillar, and extends higher towards the roof than the door glass does.
The Laguna II was introduced in 2000 and has more sharp edges - around the nose, along the sides of the car, and at the rear. The estate has more compact lamp units that are below the car's window line, and the rear screen is at a less vertical angle. The rearmost side glass of the estate is more cohesive with the door glass than on the Laguna I estate.
Renault have recently issued pictures of the Laguna III, to be introduced later this year.
