do you feel things were better when you were young?

Kids are kids, always have been. We just see more of it because of all the new media - cable TV, the Internet, etc. No worries - they will all grow up and become fine citizens and parents, just like most everyone does, regardless of their misspent youth. :>

Studies show that the up and coming generation is much more tuned into politics and the workings of the world, and that they have a better work ethic than the boomers. More initiative, energy and optimism. No "tune out, turn off" for them! The world they make will be a good one.

Things are much better now than when I was young. Much more instant information, much better tools - can you imagine hunting for a pay phone if you had an emergency in a remote area back in the 60's or 70's? Now we have cell phones. Travel is much, much safer. Planes hardly ever crash now, and while cars still do crash, it is far, far less likely to kill or injure you. Medicine is much better, too. They can cure and fix so many more things now! The world continues to provide new miracles. Oh, and young people are much, much more conscious about the impact they make on the environment and in the world in general. That can only lead to good things.

Throughout human history, things really have just gotten better and better. Sure there are always bad guys, wars, illness - but it is so much less now.

I have morals. I'm a kid.

I do believe that things were better when my parents were young. Back in the "good ol' days" most people were christians. America was founded on the basis of Christianity. I don't think it was a lot better but go back to around world war 2 and it was a whole lot better.

Most kids lose their "morals" in the transition from middle school to high school. in high school, there is more sex/drugs/violence. high school is the first place i met a peer who wasn't a virgin. first place i met a drug user (actually a lot more than just one, more like 20). Although not the first time getting into a fight, but having someone attack me and want to kill me. high school is a huge transition for a lot of kids and they fall under the pressure. I'm fine though. I am a christian and all the kids i see without morals aren't christians. a lot of people say non christians have as much morals as christians and that just isn't true.

I would not say they have no morals.
I WOULD say that most have been turned loose having been given no moral guidance or direction.
There is a "do as I say not as I do" attitude prevalent in child rearing. But the bottom line is, although kids are quick to detect and despise hypocrisy in parents/teachers/religious leaders, the actions of the "elders" speak louder than words, and that is what the kids will eventually imitate.
There is an old adage: if you plant and tend flowers, you get flowers; if you plant and tend weeds, you get weeds; if you plant nothing, you still get weeds...
All goes back to the home and parents.
Many parents today were reared according to Dr. Spock. Unfortunately (you may not know) he recanted on his deathbed and lamented his part in raising a generation of selfish thoughtless individuals.

Yes and the reason kids have no morals is because their parents and their schools have not taught them morals.

Today if a school disciplines or tries to discipline a kid in school the case often ends up in court. "How dare you discipline MY child" is the attitude seen today which was never seen when I was a kid.

When I was a kid, the kids didn't want his parents to know the school had disciplined him because he get disciplined at home for the same thing.

So yes in the area of morals things were much better than they are now

PS: A friend of mine who graduated from college in about 1972 or 1973 and became a 3rd grade school teacher once asked me to guess what he used to get yelled at for the most when he was a rookie teacher.

It was that he didn't give out enough spankings.

Things would be much better if parents spanked their little brats instead of acting like wimps only to be insulted and disrespected by them.

From a biblical point of view those that hate their kids are the ones who spare the rod. Spanking, slapping, using a cane or rod is advised biblically because it instills in the child a sense of respect for the parent or whoever uses it in authority.

This lesson can be likened to an experience with heat or fire. When a small child puts out its hand to touch a hot object it gets burned and experiences pain from the heat. From that point onwards the child starts to "obey the laws of heat"

so the mom says

I don't. I work with jr. high kids and the majority have morals. In thinking back to when I was a kid, I imagine the ratio is about the same. I didn't really hang out with the ones who didn't, so I can't say exactly how many there were.

Morally it was better in the 50s & 60s but most kids don't have a basis for morality..

I used to work with some really difficult kids. They have an incredibly strong sense of morality, fairness and what's right and wrong.

They are also used to being treated so unfairly and with prejudice that they take on the behaviours that are expected of them. It's a way of restoring their sense of fairness and control -- if they can't avoid the 'punishments' from their elders, they may as well deserve it.

Young people are fantastic. They'll rise, or fall, to our expectations. Are we going to help them or damage them?

A lot do not. No parents or grandparents there to teach them please, thank you, respect, boundaries, and harmony for all mankind. It can easily be done in the home.

I think most people were not raised this way with an exception of a few. That is why you see people bumping into each other in the public places, road rage, and overall mayhem and lack of respect. I still say: "i'm sorry if I did something wrong or bump into someone. We are all human and deserve that respect.
