I bought 2002 Ford Escape w/ 35K miles w/ 1more year on warranty(bought in 2004) The engine light was on and it ran a little funny. In the Fall of 2004 we went to have the light and engine checked out. Ford service dept. says"it's just wiring" They did some work on it and said that we would need a new o2 sensor soon. Middle of 2006 it starts to run worse than it had been -same problem worse. fixed o2 sensor- since then(january 07) it's been in the shop 5 times for the same problem that was going on in 2004 only progressively worse. (engine sputtering and occasionally dying w/ little acceleration) and BAD gas mileage. I reamed the service department this last time because I'm fed up. They ran all the tests and came back saying the car history (from the beginning) shows that the car has only been running on 2 cylinders(it's a 4) I need some help. Is ford going to replace my car? Can it be fixed? ANyone have the same thing happen?

Have not had the same thing happen, it can be fixed, and Ford is not going to replace your car. They may pay to have it fixed, if it is still under warranty. You did not buy the car new, thus expect little help from Ford, other than honoring the service contract. My '01 Escape AWD has been absolutely wonderful and trouble free. One of the best car's Ive ever owned, and i've owned quite a few. It seems to me that the problems with your car are not the car itself, but the folks working on it. I would suggest trying a different dealer, maybe one that can actually fix a car?

Ford will not buy a vehicle back unless it was having the problem since built and bought, you are the original owner, you have formally progressed through the steps Ford has set up to resolve the concerns before buying it back and falls under lemon laws.. usually after a year in use, however, usually you can forget about a buy back.. But before they buy it back, you would have had at least one to two mechanics from Ford itself try working on your car...

I'm like Batzan, you need to find another dealer...and pronto

If it's been running on 2 cylinders, it would have flashed the check engine light at you usually....

My guess by this progressively worse senario, we have some who are not too good at check engine lights more than the basics... You never said what the codes are for... for ideas, we on here need that... My guess is this thing, unless it has some sort of intermittant short, I think you got a sensor they haven't cheked out yet that's failing.. or this thing has a bad hose somewheres (a air leak will cause the issues you describe pretty good)

step one.. bring to another Ford dealer....

And two.. it can be fixed.. if the second dealer can't figure it out, they have resources to get help.. including those mechanics I talk about from Ford who actually come to the dealer to fix the car with a mechanic.

Well, it may a little late now, but you can try calling the 1-800 number in the owner's manual. That will give you customer service in Dearborn, MI. Discuss the problem with them and give them the story. Hopefully they may be able to help you. I would find another dealer. Dearborn may want to hear about how this guy operates. good luck.
