Atheist think Christians only read parts of the Bible their Pastor/preacher says is ok,,and we only believe what our pastor/preacher says is true.
1>I have a mind of my own, I read what and when I want.
2>I do not attent church anymore, so there is no Pastor/preacher to tell me what to do, or believe.
3>I have not now or ever had anyone tell me to be afraid of death or dying,,or I should be
4>Nor was I told the Bible tales as fairey tales
5>I believe all Christians have BRAINS of their own and can make their own decisions based on their own thoughts. I KNOW I DO, AND HAVE MADE THE DECISION TO BE A CHRISTIAN BASED ON WHAT I HAVE READ AND HEARD.

Atheists>>>how many of you have ever actually said that you think that christians only read parts of the bible that their pastor/preacher says are ok, and only beleive what their pastor says is true?

1>you have a mind of your own, but you choose to fill it with nonsense

2>you don't attend church anymore, but for some reason you still believe what you were told when you were there

3>why would anyone tell you to be afraid of death or dying? (p.s. - you already are afraid).

4>the bible is fairy tales, and if you are like the average christian, they were told to you from before you were capable of comprehending what you were being told

5>some christians have brains of their own, and make their own decisions based on their own thoughts - i don't know whether you do or not, and im not sure what prompted your decision, but it probably wasn't rational thought considering the outcome.

I applaud your independence and your determination to think and speak for yourself. You do what you want out of personal motivation and read what you want based on your own personal inclination. You are proud of your independence and have a right to be.

However, do you think you would be in the place you are today without the influence of some sort of past influence from a pastor/preacher/religious guide/spiritual mentor?

I agree with you that Christians have brains of their own and can think for themselves, however at some point in the past they were obviously influenced (nay, indoctrinated) enough by someone else who shaped their understanding of Christianity and gave them a push in a certain spiritual direction. After all, no one grows up a Christian unless someone somewhere teaches them about Jesus and the Bible along the way.

That being said, I think you're much better off addressing your own religious perspective independently rather than succumbing to the whims of someone in a theocratic hierarchy.

First, you are misrepresenting Atheists. Atheists do not say that Christians are told the Bible is fairy tales; Atheists say that Christians tell Bible stories to their children, which they do (in general).

Atheists do not say that Christian children are told to be afraid of death or dying, but they do say that Christians are, for the most part, fear-filled people.

If you no longer attend Church, then you are no longer a Christian in communion. If you don't attend church, I think it difficult for you to say that you are a typical church-going Christian.

Most Christians will read what they wish, when they wish, but the point that Atheists make is that Christians are somewhat compelled to believe certain things are not worth reading. For example; a Christian would find certain books simply unappealing; they might have no interest in contradictory views.

Yes, I know you all have "brains" that seem to think all by themselves. If you're still believing that some magical sky-god created everything, then your critical thinking skills leave much to be desired.

It is also interesting that you say you have made the decision to be a Christian based on what you have read and heard. You should try making your decision based on evidence. There is no god, Jesus did not rise from the dead, and the bible is a fairy tale.

That isn't what we think you do. We think that you pick and chose what to follow, then turn around and say the whole book is perfect and the word of God.

Well if that is true, why don't you do sacrifices like the whole first chapter of Leviticus describes. It says that God likes the smell of burning flesh, so why not please him?

FYI: Leviticus is very often the book that you then use to condemn homosexuals.

We are just looking for some consistency here. Either it is the word of God or it ain't.......make up your minds.

I agree with Marguerite!

Damn that episode was hilarious. The only difference between an xtian like "Marguerite" and the ones you describe in question, is the level of degree. The beliefs are the same, and equally silly. In fact, I can't stop giggling about that uber-xtian Marguerite!! Ouch! My side hurts now. Help me lord jesus!

So you read things like -

"But if this thing be true, [and the tokens of] virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you."

"[T]hey took the king's sons, and slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to Jezebel. And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning."

"That whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. "

- and decided that is a just and loving god that should be worshiped? I find that quite strange.

You may have made your decisions on reading and thinking, but a vast number of people who come onto this forum quite obviously, from the extreme lack of intelligence in their questions, have absolutely no idea what they are saying. Their tent preacher told them something and they just regurgitated it regardless of how stupid it might be. You are a minority on this forum, but then the more vocal of people are usually the minority.

5> and I do study it from the original languages by my pastor, but the bible is an intricate peice of literature whereby you can compare scripture with scripture. It is not like reading a book from cover to cover it is like studying for a test where you find answers in old testament that predicted new testament and vise versa. It is uniquely designed and needs to be taught or studied.

Well, good for you. At least you've thought about your choice.

Although I suspect you're telling at least one fib...
"I believe all Christians have BRAINS of their own and can make their own decisions based on their own thoughts. "

You must know that this isn't the case for ALL christians, surely. Dump the soft soap routine. I would respect you more if you were more honest.
