Sit ups will tone & strengthen ur abdominal muscles, but they wont really make u thinner.
To lose weight (fat) u will need a combination of a good healthy diet & a suitable exercise regime.
To get a "six pack" u need to be lean. It doesnt matter how many sit ups u do if there is a layer of fat over ur abdominal muscles u wont have a six pack.

Yes!!! Sit ups are great for you and you will see great results in time. But you have to keep up with it and do them every day. Start out with as many as you can do and add ten every week. Your abdominal muscles are one of the few muscle groups you can work everyday so take advantage of it and get looking and feeling great!:)

they are just as effective in terms of how the muscles of the mid section are stimulated by exercise. when the various muscle of the midsection are exercised they strengthen holding the stomach tight.
now to trim down the mid section you need to simultaneously make changes to your diet and/or caloric intake. fat storage occurs when there is an either an excess of nutrients or a lack of sufficient daily activity to utilize those nutrients. increasing the daily level of exercise and changes to the diet will definetly result in postive changes to the abdominal region

Sit ups only work out a certain section of your abs. Try and find a few excersises that work out the upper, middle, and lower abs, that way they all look great. Try doing decline sit ups, if thats too eazy put a weight on your chest. If even thats too easy twist your body when you come up. Have your left elbow touch your right knee, your right elbow touch your left knee. Or go to this site and see what they recomend for ab work outs, or anyother muscle you want to work out http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbmaintrain.htm

What it will do is build up muscle UNDER the fat...you still need to do some sort of exercise (running/biking/etc) to burn the fat, but the muscle WILL help with this.
