With digital TV coming soon, you will need the best signal you can get. You can estimate how strong the TV signal is in your area by looking at the length of TV aerials on peoples' roofs. If they are generally long, yo're in a poor reception area. With analogue TV as the signal weakens the picture gradually gets snowier until no longer watchable. With digital there is a sudden point at which the signal is too weak to be usable. This is called the edge of the cliff effect. Even with a good outdoor aerial you may not get all Freeview channels because until the analogue is switched off, some freeview channel groups are being transmitted out- of -band and need a wideband aerial to receive them. Also digital is not on full power yet until analogue is switched off. Here is a link to help you find out what you need in your location..

Hope this helps.

That really depends on your location
If you have a TV station that is EAST of you
and the room with the aerial only has a WEST
facing window then NO it wont be any good
If you are lucky you will have windows on at least
two sides of the room
Another factor is terrain if there is a large hill or mountain between you and the TV station Tower reception
will be bad
And lastly if you are only 1-2 miles from the TV station Tower
the picture will be heavily overloaded with multipath

I assume you mean like a rabbit ears type to sit atop the tv.
Don't get real cheap ones. Get one with amp in it, from $40-$50.
And excellent one I've found is called Terk TV-5 available at Best Buy, and maybe other electronics stores. It looks like a number 8 lying horizontally, so there's no metal poles (the rabbit ears) to have to mess with trying to adjust so weirdly.
The "crazy 8" antenna can rotate and move for adjustment, but it's so incredibly easy to use. And I've found it gets the signals much better than the old rabbit ears kind. I have one atop my tv for local channels.
Now, there's other kinds of indoor atennas, specifically to be used with plasma or lcd tv's when they become HD or high definition. They will pick up extra signals that are coming thru the air, not the cable. But I have no experience with them.

If indoor aerials were all that good why would engineers go to the trouble of designing outdoor TV antennas and why would people insist on fitting one of these thing to roof of their house ?. Of course if you live next door to the TV transmitter then anything stuck into your TV aerial socket like a rusty nail or a damp shoe lace works very well !!!! .

there's no such element as a "best" indoor aerial for Freeview. they're all undesirable. All you're able to do is to aim and locate the "least worst". that's best to dodge "boosters" in case you could because of the fact those at the instant are not very good and might from time to time fail, leaving you with not something. the rule of thumb with television aerials is "the bigger they're then the greater advantageous they're". this suggests that's good to count quantity the style of horizontal aspects (the bars) on the aerial. The greater - the merrier. those bars seize and concentration the television broadcast sign, so greater effective aerials are greater delicate and could be greater advantageous in a position to acquire indicators that are weakened from passing by partitions. television aerials have a discern on the container referred to as "earnings". it somewhat is a demonstration of the potential to acquire vulnerable television indicators (its "sensitivity"). that's measured in "decibels" (dB). look for the aerial with the optimal dB quantity. once you have got here upon maximum delicate "severe earnings" aerial then mount it as severe interior the room as you could, on an identical time as nevertheless having it element in direction of the transmitter. this might recommend that's good to apply an prolonged extension cable so purchase this once you get the aerial.
