Tanning is a result of damage to the skin. sunscreen helps to minimize the potential for damage, but it has it's limits. For instance, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 only allows you 30 minutes in the sun, no matter how often you apply it, 30 minutes is it.

If you lay out in the sun a lot, you could. Also, if you don't use sunscreen correctly (or reapply frequently enough). Even if you don't get cancer, you invite "sunspots" later in age all over your hands and face esp. - not fun.
