an award of extreme honor that people pray they won't receive.

The Purple Heart is presented to members of the U.S. military who have sustained injuries or have been killed in conflict with an armed enemy. It is intended, in part, to honor those whose sacrifices for the benefit of our country might not otherwise be noted on the large-scale canvas of military history.

But it wasn't always that way. It started with George Washington...recognition was needed for soldiers whose significant contributions helped to forward the cause, but the Continental Congress was hesitant to hand out more money for promotions. So Washington initiated the Badge of Military Merit, and allowed for it to be presented to any soldier -- including enlisted men -- whose wartime conduct deserved distinction.
Later decided that being wounded or killed in combat was to be rewarded.
over 800,000 Purple Heart medals have been awarded, some in formal ceremonies, others as intimate as a medal pinned to a hospital gown. The qualifications have expanded during that time as well, to include injuries to servicemen and women from terrorist attacks, friendly fire and from being part of a peacekeeping force.

A Purple Heart is an award given for wounds received in action with an enemy! That is not the original purpose of the Medal! George Washington, who began using it, awarded it for gallantry, much like the Medal of Honor today. Most of his records, and the names awarded it, have been lost.

In order to get one, you have to be treated by a physician! I think that is BS as a know a lot of medics who can remove shrapnel and suture a wound as well as any Md. A lot of times, men did not want to leave the field for injuries that were not life threatening. That should be changed! If you are wounded, you are wounded, I don't care who sees you, or doesn't see you!

I hate liberals#3, you are full of it! That's all you conservatives can do is lie and belittle those who have been awarded a Purple Heart! I am sure you don't have one!

It is given for injury in combat. Sadly it was greatly de-valued in Vietnam when every serviceman who caught a venereal disease got one!!! The justification being that the VC were deliberately infecting US troops!!!
