You have an excellent question. There's a book called Middlesex that discusses the gender issues faced by hermaphrodites in our society. The point of the book is that the traditional male female dichotomy is too simplistic and leaves a lot of people undefined. Rather than worry about what religious people feel on these issues, I think that hermaphrodites should lead their lives in the way that makes them happiest. Some end up changing their bodies to be one sex, but they feel attraction to either sex because of their hormones. These people can just define themselves as bisexual and be happy.

Hermaphrodites are an exception to the rule. There is an obvious difference and they are truly the way God made them. All the same rules still apply though, such as not having premarital or extramarital sex. They just have an extra choice to make. We have a family friend who has this condition. A person with both are usually more one sex than the other so the choice is probably not a hard one. I believe the best thing is to let the child grow into adulthood and it will know which sex it most identifies with, then they could choose to be whichever sex they identify with. I don't think a parent or dr. should ever make that decision for a small child or baby.God bless!!
I have to say to uncannydanny, although I know you mean well...it is not a sin to be a hermaphrodite. Only to have sex outside of marriage. Being born with both sex organs is absolutely not a sin. Yes we are all sinners but this is not sin. Respectfully.Bert
I would like to say to Skippy, that's the furthest thing from the truth. We had a hermaphrodite live with us for many months and were very respectful. I do believe you are very disrespectful to fundamentalist though. I'm not sure why. maybe someone wasn't nice to you or something. But my Christian friends are respectful people.

As I always say;
Religion is a lifestyle, people choose the way they want to live their lives.
Gay or Hermaphrodites are naturally born the way they are, there naturally living their lives as best as they can, just like the rest of the human race.

When I took A&P last semester, I learned that Hermaphrodites may have both sex organs, but only one is normally functional. Also, they usually have testing done to determine their sex chromosomes. You may have both sex organs but genetically be a boy (or a girl) . Genetically, no one is both. From there, they can determine which set or sex organs are best suited to the individual. Hope this helps!

That's a great question, and one I really don't know too much about. Suffice to say that if it is a sin, then they're just like the rest of us - we're all sinners, after all.
In Christian theology, all your sins are already paid for by Christ's death, so it doesn't matter what you've done or do. Faith in Christ's substitution should be the focus of anyone's walk with God in Christ, not a neurotic obsession with rules and rituals about what is and isn't a sin.
The fact that it's all paid for should be enough.
I hope that's somewhat helpful, at least.

A hermaphrodite is an extremely rare, and unfortunate, person who has suffered genetic mutational dysfunction. It's an accident of nature. Such people are unable to reproduce. They are not "both". They are neither one nor the other. God's love for them is just as complete as it is for every other person and He has provided for the forgiveness of their sins, jsut as He has for every other person.

I assume that normal people treat hermaphrodites with respect, and fundies treat them like they are a corruption of "God's plan".
As a general rule, if there is a choice between showing empathy to others and being a heartless bigot, the fundamentalists will always take the latter option.

I am a christian that believes that gays are born the way they are, but they do choose to live that life-style. I believe it was Michaelangelo, who did the statue of David, that felt strong sexual urges for men, but he chose not to do so, because he deemed it a sin. Instead he created images of men in the nude, to compensate his urge. I cannot fathom what kept him from acting on it, by creating these images. Maybe he took cold showers after he created them.
As for Hermorphadidites, I'm not sure.
I believe that when a person feels this way or is born with both parts that they may have been twins that where born into one body. The ones that only have one body part may have gotten their siblings hormones.

I think your opening statement answers your own question.
Gay is a choice.
Hermaphrodite isn't.
What I say about people being born 'babies', is that there is no sexual preference or any other kind of advanced cognitive preferences (things they choose) in a baby's life. Although they are gender specific, babies are not sexual creatures. How can a baby be homosexual? They aren't sexual in the first place. It's only as they grow and experience life and their own development that they become AWARE of gender differences, and combined with their growing up environment and experiences, they make choices. Some choose to become chaste or virtuous (for lack of better words), others choose to become promiscuous. Most choose to be heterosexual, some choose to be homosexual.
I don't think anybody could speak on God's behalf and give a satisfactory answer. Truth be told, we do not know the mind of God.
