I can't believe these answers! I agree with you. Not all muslims are bad. there are just as many hostile americans as muslims. I think illegal immigration is being dealt with VERY poorly. I have met muslims, and yes they were some of the nicest and loving people I have met. You don't get that in America anymore.

To those who talk about Islam calling for death for non-believers: Christianity AND Judaism ALSO PREACH A DEATH SENTENCE FOR NON-BELIEVERS:

Gee, you didn't know? Wow, so Christians don't stone non-believers to death? Maybe that's because religion isn't just about religious texts. Same goes for Islam. Just quoting something you don't understand doesn't prove anything.

To answer hypofocus first, you left out the crucial part in the 'stone the apostates' quote from the OT, which you replaced with the ellipsis. It reads: "And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such an abomination is wrought in Israel" IN ISRAEL. That is key, because the passage itself provides a limited context for its own application. Certainly, it was a bad day for apostates in ancient Israel, but it does not apply anymore, because we are no longer in Ancient Israel. The "gates" referred to in the passage where the people are to be stoned to death no longer exist. Modern Israel is not ancient Israel, and is only a fraction of the land anyway. Leaving out strategic parts is the only way you can make it seem that Judaism/Christianity command the same things Islam commands. (And for the record, I have no dogs in this fight; I'm an atheist, so I think all religion sucks.)

To answer the main question, unfortunately, the terrorism and the war are stirring up anti-Muslim sentiments. These are misdirected, because we should focus on the ideology at play and not so much the people. It is, after all, the ideology that makes the people dangerous. And no, to answer another of your statements, Islam is not the Religion of Peace. Unless you consider the religion of peace to preach the murder of apostates, the murder of those who criticise or make fun of the Prophet, and jihad, fighting in Allah's Cause. Here are verses that sum up the goals of Islam:
• Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians], until they pay the Jizya [this is a special tax that is supposed to be levied on non-Muslims within an Islamic state] with willing submission ["in acknowledgment of superiority"], and feel themselves subdued ["being brought low"; "and they are in a state of subjection"]. (S.9:29)
• Say to the Unbelievers, if (now) they desist (from Unbelief), their past would be forgiven them; but if they persist, the punishment of those before them is already (a matter of warning for them) And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do. (S.8:38-39)
• O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him). (S.9:123)
• Narrated Jubair bin Haiya: 'Umar SENT the Muslims to the great countries TO FIGHT the pagans. When Al-Hurmuzan embraced Islam, 'Umar said to him. "I would like to consult you regarding these countries which I intend to INVADE." So in conclusion, the War on Terrorism should NOT become an excuse to hate Muslims. We should take utmost precautions that we do not slip into hating and discriminating against individuals. But many leaders in the Middle-East have recognised the war for what it is, and called it "a War on Islam". It is Islam that preaches the fighting against non-Muslims (kuffar) until everyone converts or submits to Islamic control of the country. That is what we are up against. I will leave you with two quotations:
