I have a Garmin c550 and love it. Not only does it give directions, it knows where everything is. That is, its pre-programmed database knows where every gas station, ATM, and Starbucks in North America is. (I had to meet my friend at an obscure sailing club, but he didn't know the address. The Garmin not only knew where it was, it knew the phone number of the club.) It's amazing. Oh, it also works as a Bluetooth speakerphone and gives traffic alerts.

I have a factory one in my Honda mini van. I love it when I travel to a city that I dont know where im going. I just bought my dad a portable one. I researched them and the Garmin looks like the one to buy. I got my dad the c-340 model and it was $329 at circuit city on sale. Walmart also has the same one online for that price. The c-340 is mid-priced and has all the features you probably would want.
