My fiance propose to me a week ago and we had to get the ring resized. We pick it up next week. Then after we do that we were going to take professional pictures at a portriat studio and it takes two weeks til we get the pictures in our hands. Then we were going to mail and pass them out. A whole 3-4 week process. (And we were thinking of having magnets made with thepicture on them and sending those to as a save the date for the engagment party too). Is this all too much. (Money is not the issue)

Well, honestly? I think it might be overkill...save that money for the wedding. :)

Sounds normal to me...

My bro just did the same thing only the ring didn't have to be resized because it fit properly. Also my future SIL is a photographer so she had someone she works with do the photos for free.

Magnets are a good idea, we are going to a wedding this weekend and the save the date magnet with thier picture on it is holding the wedding invite up on the fridge right now ( =

Congratulations!

Not at all too much, most people take engagement pictures to put in the newspaper and such. many couples use them as save the date cards or even on their invitations and as decorations at the wedding. What better excuse to get a professional, casual picture of the two of you at one of the happiest times of your life? The wedding pics will be much more formal, the engagement pics will be more fun and show the lighter sides of you!

That sounds like a wonderful way to announce your engagement. You could make the magnets part of your Save The Date Cards.

Okay, I read all the other answers to make sure I wasn't going to repeat myself and it seems I'm clear!

I am a professional wedding photographer and I give the engagement session with three of my wedding packages. The couple gets the session and several images in the package when they sign me to do their wedding. So check with your photographer to see what they offer. If you haven't signed a photographer you should start looking. We often book up a year in advance.

Another route is to go to bridal shows. I give dozens and dozens of engagement sessions away at those shows just to get the couple into my studio so that I can talk with them about the wedding. I also give them a free 8x10 with it. Look in your area for those bridal shows!

The last resort is to actually pay for a session. Go to www.ppa.com and click on 'consumers' and go to 'find a photographer' and look for a photographer in your area.

Then check out their web sites, call them , go in for an interview and check out their work and prices. Look for one that fits your prices BUT can also take pictures. Don't go with the cheapest if they can't take pictures. You will only be engaged once in your life. Shop for what you want and see what you can work out!

Congratulations.

I don't think so. A friend of ours is a professional photographer so as an engagement gift he gave us an AMAZING deal on some engagement pictures. We went to a park and he took some beautiful pictures of us (the candids were my favorites). We're going to use them as part of our save-the-dates and as our marriage announcement in the papers. We're not sending engagement announcements at all though.

In my opinion, it is too much. BUT that's just me.

When my fiance's cousin got married in April, she did that. I have never met her. She lives on the other side of the country. I managed to get on her email list and she sent links to the entire photo shoot. At first I had no idea who she was or why she was sending her pictures to me. THEN I saw some of the other names in the TO: line of the email and realized they were all his relatives. Then when the wedding announcements came, it had a photo of them. Since I happened to have a photo collage frame I was putting together, I put it in there, but otherwise, I might have tossed it in a pile, never to be seen again.

Consider the recipients. Will they enjoy a photo? Or will it get tossed somewhere? Maybe just send the email link to everyone whose email you have and only print them for those you are closest to and will enjoy a photo.

Money should be the issue, even if your finace has a lot of money. The money spent on professional pictures for the engagement announcement would be better spent elsewhere, like buying a house if you don't already have one. Starting a college fund for your future kids, etc.

In the end, it's both of your calls, if you both want to do it, do it.

Hopefully you are only going to do this once so do it right. I'm getting married soon and would love to get pics. taken for the announcements but money is an issue right now. As long as you are not pushing you fiancee into doing something he doesn't want to do and money is not a problem i say do it. P.S. Good luck!

I think it all sounds very nice. Just be sure your fiance is on board with all of these things as well. I think people will appreciate the thought you have put into this. Have fun with the whole process!

Congratulations and Good luck!

NO I think it is perfectly fine. Also quite common! I am also going to have engagement pictures taken (however not professionally) and have one of the pictures on our STD magnets!
