In small towns most people would never get their hair styled by someone who didn't also look good. In Atlanta, we don't have to worry about that so much since we have such variety here. I think professionalism is key--you don't want a gossiping stylist or one that chews gum while giving you a wash and set. Authenticity is important too--you don't want a person with the fake "cheerleader perky" attitude--just someone down to earth but knowledgeable in what he/she does. Before I became a cosmetologist, the biggest complaint I've heard from people is their stylists would cut too much off of their hair or style it as they wanted instead of the way the client wanted his/her hair to look. That's something we all must avoid--only give our opinions when we're asked and regardless do what the client says. The worst thing that ever happened was when my sister complained to the manager of a salon about her hair being burned, the manager didn't take my sister to a private area and instead of another customer got in my sister's business with the salon manager. That is the worst case of professionalism--if you open a salon be sure to have a private room/office for feedback and customer concerns.

I'm guessing you style African-American hair. Sistahs want some one that will hook them up! That's most important. Someone that makes them feel more comfy and at ease while getting a style is even better. Everyone wants a stylists that they can trust, because they may not always know how they want their hair to look if they want to try something different. A good-no GREAT stylist will be able to pick up the slack and use their creativity to give their client that new, hot look.

For starters I want someone who will do exactly want I want and ask for, therefore that will make me feel that I can trust someone with my hair so that in the future i will be open to suggestion. Establishing trust is important. Other than that conversation, chit chat, showing that you care( even if you don't), a smiling face, tolerance with the tricky customers are necessary. As you might already know, for us women is important to have someone to talk and understand and getting your hair or nails or whatever services we seek for there will always be the need for more connection...It's in woman's nature

For me, it's not so much about conversation and comfort. It's about how good the stylist is at working with various types of hairstyles, coloring techniques, perms, extensions and so on.

I go to one of the top rated salons in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I am glad that my stylist makes great conversation and makes it fun, but I would not have been comfortable unless I was sure he really knew what he was doing and took the time to ask about my lifestyle and how much time I wanted to spend working on my hair each day.

The time he took, and his proffessionalism in checking out the condition and texture of my hair, discussing my lifestyle, what I wanted in a hairstyle and a stylist made me comfortable enough to give him full rein in coloring, styling and cut of my hair.

This really says something, since NONE of the stylist I had in the past ever earned my trust so fast.

I would also suggest that you put up pictures of styles that YOU have done on your clients. A lot of salons, put up pictures of various styles and colors, but if their stylists can't easily recreate them with their clients, what's the point?

Good luck in your business endeavors.

I love it when my hairstylist not only remembers my hair (VERY helpful, especially since I have very thick hair that involves longer appointments and lots of layering), but remembers me as well! When they know what's going on in my life, it makes me feel like I'm visiting a friend who happens to be cutting my hair!

Of course I want someone that knows what she is doing, I guess someone I can consider a friend, that is very reliable, and in high demand. I am in Alpharetta, GA and it is hard to find a good hairstylist.

A woman looks for a nice natural flow, i have natural curly type hair and all i need is a nice wash, blowdry and maybe a light flat iron, but if the stylest is good, they can blow dry your hair for maximum potetental.
