Things such as the hormones that control our sex drive and emotions and how they relate to our behavior and potentially us commiting a 'sin'. Does sin take into account psychological disorders? I have not heard sorties from the bible that talk about a sinner but then explain that the sinner might have suffered from PTSD which might explain his sinning. So my question is why does Jesus not teach about this? Everything seems to be black and white according to religion. It can't be that life is that simple.

Abby: The brain is most important in our thought process even if you beleive in a soul you cannot deny scientific facts about the brain and how it controls the vast majority of our life even if it is only here on earth. So being such a large factor in our life on earth I would think that he would have said something about it even if it was a parable

Teach us about that for what? Salvation is much more important. Get that down first my friend and then worry about other things.

I completely agree with Imacatholic, but to add to this: current neuroscience does indeed teach us that the brain is the organ of thought. Without a brain we would not think, move, or have consciousness. HOWEVER, neuroscience has not "done away" with the soul. It has simply stated what christians have always affirmed: that the body and the soul are a unity, hence the Ressurection of the body. That we have a sense of "self" and a definite "I" and a "mind" is a definate clue to the existence of the soul. This is an enormous debate and too difficult to get into here and is more appropriate in a philosophy discussion. Neuroscience has NOT disproven the existence of the soul. Why would God allow disease? Because our world is fallen and broken. Because we have free will and can do evil and those actions caused seperation from God and hence immortal, perfect physical health and vitality. Jesus came to give us what we needed for salvation. An expose into every aspect of creation and its function would take millenia to divulge and would be of no use to human beings which require salvation, goodness and truth RIGHT NOW. Those are questions for science to resolve.

Jesus does teach us psychology. For example, he teaches us how to be happy in the Beatitudes and about forgiveness in the parable of the Prodigal Son.

Yes, sin does take into account psychological disorders.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

If the thought, word, deed, or omission is not deliberate and instead caused by a psychological disorder then there is no sin. This is why there can be a "not guilty by reason of insanity" verdict in court.

Jesus cured many people either possessed by demons and/or with psychological disorders. He did not say that they were sinners.

To make things even less black and white, Catholics even group sins in two categories, mortal and venial.

A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.

Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.

However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.

People die all the time with venial sins on their conscience and they will go to heaven.

With love in Christ.

Everytime Jesus healed someone, he also forgave their sins. this says to me that you are right, physical health and spiritual health are related. The Bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Jesus died on the cross for all sins. If you accept Christ payment on the cross as your own payment of death for your sins, they are forgiven- no matter what the reason for your sin is. Th Bible does not tell us that we can never sin, it tells us that there is a consequence of death for that sin, we can pay it ourselves, or let Christ pick up the tab. The Bible, perhaps, doesn't speak of the brain of psychology because those things were not to be revealed at that time. Now that we know about mental disorders, we can use that knowledge to help others come to the Truth, and overcome their challenges. Christ will always meet you where you are, He loves everyone!

Jesus did speak about the faultlessness of the afflicted, and did so often.

He was once asked point blank by his apostles whether a blind man was blind because of his sins or his parents. He answered, "Neither", but that the man's purpose was to show the glory of God at work.

Did he give a lecture on neurochemistry? No - and for reasons that I would imagine compare well with Star Trek's "Prime Directive." But it is wrong to say he never discussed the reasons for affliction.

The Bible teaches that our sinful urges may come from Satan and direct evil or may come from our flesh and our sinful desires. Regardless of where they come from we are told to resist and to flee--to rely on God for truth and direction and to act in obedience--even when it is difficult.

It is a part of our culture that we try to explain away and excuse sin based on what we see as the particular difficulties an individual faces. Still God calls it sin. But certainly the Bible also teaches that God is compassionate, loving, all-knowing, just, and merciful. I trust that He knows how to free the person who sins out of mental illness or other defect. "He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

Blessings.

Those were created by man to justify actions...Drugs will fix anything these days.according to Doctors..what God teaches his children is that He is the Healer, if we ask... I have known several people with sever psychological disorders who turned their life over to Christ who are now drug free, happy and you would never know they were 'imbalanced' (for lack of a better term)...For the Record I do believe Doctors do a lot of Good, I just feel very strongly that they prescribe drugs way to quickly to 'cure' people....This has not been going on forever it is a much more recent epidemic.

Jesus does not address this for the same reason he does not discuss the medical terminology for the physical conditions he cured. God deals with the spiritual first. God does not differentiate between the disabled and physically fit. We are all one in God's eyes. If one is sick, they have an obligation to see the doctor to get well. Ditto for a spiritual problem.

Because every god and religions that have existed were all invented in a time when people did not know much about anything. It was easy to control people with some story that if you did bad you would go to hell and if you did good you would go to heaven or some other stories similar to these.

According to the religion, remember, demons are responsible for illnesses, the world is flat, and stars are tiny objects that fall from the sky.

God must not have known much about her creation.

Of (just a thought) maybe the Bible is not the Word of God.

yes sin takes into account psychological disorders. most psychological disorders are the result of a lack of self-control, not genetics.

He taught plenty of psychology. "not an eye for an eye, for in doing this, you heap hot coals upon him": reverse psychology, evoking guilt. "take the plank out of your eye before you try to take the speck out of someone else's eye": emotional security and empathy.

why didn't He teach about the brain? the only people who could possibly understand were doctors, and of course, they did not have the mans to cure psychological diseases. without the ability to extract certain chemicals or isolate a gene to combat its effects, one cannot combat it.

black and white is more realistic. grey areas are just a pardon for everything
