Why do we only use a fraction of the potential of our brains?

If it was god's intention that we die after 70-80 years, why did he give our human bodies this potential if we could never realise it? How would you explain this?

Helper made an interesting point, we live only 70-80 years because we sinned.. how long would we live if we had not sinned?

We would have lived forever if it wasn't for sin, and therefore we would have used our brains to our full potential.

I'm not certain but have ideas.
1) I read on a Theosophy website that we, as the human race, have 7 stages to evolve through and are only on the 5th stage. We are transforming from very physical, to very spirtual beings and eventually we will be just floating souls that are more intellectual.
.2)..But then you can see how much damage our technological intelligence has done to our environment...perhaps if we were even more intellegent we would completley destroy ourselves. Knowledge is power, and lots of powerful people are dangerous.
3) On another note, some people would think we have lost brain power because technology does it for us, and other parts of our brain hold other talents we have lost, such as telepathy.
Finally, 4) In reality, if everyone only is using 5% of there possible brain power, it might impossible for such stupid creatures to answer? Maybe you could ask a breed of animal with a higher brain capacity.

First of all, ,modern medical evidence shows that we use ALL of our brain. It has been proven through a number of tests including: electrophysiology, electroencephalography (EEGs), magnetoencephalography (MEGs), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRIs), and positron emission tomography (PETs), all of which are common tools used by neurologists today.

The idea that we only use a fraction of the brain came from an earlier time when we knew almost nothing about how the brain worked, and but the myth is still popular with the average Joe. It sounds interesting, but we now know that it's just not true.

The second part of your question is meaningless because it assumes that humans don't use all the brain, but that's not the case. Nothing to explain. :)

The brain thing is a mystery.

Regarding why we live only 70-80 years of age, it's because we sinned.

A long time ago, you were really old if you were 35.

I wouldn't explain it. I just wonder why God would have it that 1/4 of children born would kill their mothers without modern medical help. And all because of that organ you mentioned before, the brain.

Of course, according to neurology, humans actually use 100% of their brain. What you are conscious of is a different story. Thats not very measurable. We reach our full potential of course, unless you interfere and place goals upon what potential should be. If you study chess, your brains ability to evaluate chess positions will increase. But whether or not this is worth the time invested is completely up to the individual's priorities.

More uniformed zealots, we use every single inch of our brain, just not all at the same time. That 10% myth was just that, a myth for people without the education to know better. If the catholic church accepts evolution and big bang theory then what makes fundie americans think they know the bible better than the pope?

Very good question; I 'm certain that a religious response would be something like; you just have to believe in god, or god's will or it is not for us to question god's action or intentions.

You'll never get a definitive answer from a very religious person.

interesting as this is an example of evolution, we are living longer and longer. But you assume that the slow proggresion of the human race was down to evolution, what if it was when the snake, in the garden of edan, let sin and evil into thw world or maybe it was gods plan
