My husband and I are discipling a couple who is new in their faith. We are beginning a bible study together, and I would like to know if you have any suggestions for a study. Book studies are fine, but I want us to go deep in the bible. In other words, I want a to use a study to support the bible, no the bible to support the study. I'm tired of studies that only have you read a verse here and there. I want some good reading. I am looking for something for someone only beginning to study the bible. Serious answers are appreciated.

I agree with those who suggested the book of Romans. In this profound Epistle Paul explores all the wrong options and takes to the only correct one. The wrong solutions being pleasure and pride ( chapters 1 & 2 ), the correct solution being Jesus Christ ( 3:21-26). The letter concludes with practical instruction for a growing church, including thoughts on spiritual gifts (12:3-8), genuine love (12:9-21 ) and good citizenship (13:1-14 ). The final chapters provide brilliant instruction for dealing with everything from church division to difficult brethen. Romans is a life changing letter for people who are willing to admit they are sinners. We've entitled the book of Romans study " The Roman Road ". Good luck to you both and God Bless you as you bless others...

All good Bible studies will move around in the Bible to show you the particulars of any doctrine because of the way God caused the Bible to be written:

Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

I agree with the suggestions to study the book of Romans, but read it carefully. It does NOT say what most of the people here suggest.

Read some books by Joyce Meyers. She is really good. Some of favorites are How to Hear from God, Battlefield of the mind, Eight Ways to Keep the Devil Under Your Feet, Me and My Big Mouth. There are others that I have read that I really liked. A lot of her books also have study guides. One thing that she does that I like is that she will give you a verse and relate to the issues of today. She makes sense of things that I did not understand before. It really hit home!! She is not someone who is just preaching and writing. She is who is writing from personal experience. When I read her books I could actually feel the love and devotion she had on writing her books and her work. I really recommend them to every Christian, especially Battlefield of the Mind. They changed my life.

Try the book called Life like a Jesus Freak. Great Reverences and good guide. First choice will always be the Bible. Why not try different translations and see if it explain things better. God Bless

follow your own advice...don't do a study that picks and chooses verses...pick a book and read it verse by verse until you're done.
start with something like romans or james or a book with life lessons etc...also i'd suggest getting a bullingers companion bible..there are hundreds of references in the margins that help with translations, idioms or figures of speech etc....check amazon for one around $50

What you would all find useful are word studies.

Take a word and its variations, and list out all the passages that use that word or variants. Look at the context and discern what the meaning is that works for all passages affected by it.

You just might be surprised at how many words and concepts you have that are not accurate.

I would recommend Romans 6 especially for new Christians it explains what it means to be a Christian being made new through faith. How we are free from the penalty of law yet by faith changed to God's righteousness.
