My girlfriend's doctor has recommended that she refrain from having sex during her two week recovery time following her eye surgery. Why?

We are lesbians. Does this make a difference?

Listen to Princeidoc.

The retina, after it has detached from the rest of the eye, becomes very fragile, and if someone strains, does anything to increase their blood pressure or heart rate, it puts additional strain on the blood vessels to the retina. Being lesbians has absolutely nothing to do with it. My retinal specialists instruct their patients not to even lift anything over 10 pounds for 2 weeks!

There are different procedures for retinal reattachment: Scleral buckles, cryotherapy, laser, gas bubbles. If she is having the gas bubble procedure, she would also need to remain in a particular position depending on where the detachment is.

Her doctor has made a good recommendation, and while I'm not a retina specialist myself...I do know what the eye surgeons in the office I work for recommend...and I have seen recurrent retinal detachment come back in because the patient maybe went back to work to a physical/lifting job too soon.

Think this way...is risking a return to good vision worth not heeding the doctor's recommendations for a few evenings of intimacy leading to more surgeries and loss of vision that could lead to permanancy.

Best of luck to your girlfriend on her surgery, and heed her physician's instructions, or more eye surgeries could be in the future.

Sex and orgasms raises eye pressure and any extra eye pressure can detach it again causing more surgery. My husband is having lens replacement surgery soon and we are freaking out about the 2 weeks off.

I do see a problem with that. Although you may have to be careful because in some instances you cannot elevate the blood pressure or do strenuous activities because it can interfere with the healing process of the eye. Think of it this way, heart rate goes up, heart works harder, eye takes longer to hear and may be dangerous, i.e. blood clot and hemerging.

Had glasses considering that i grew to become into approximately 12; experimented with contacts at approximately 18 (hated them); had laser eye surgical treatment decrease back in 2000 - exceptionally advise it. do exactly no longer skimp on the physician.

I'm not making fun, but the question struck me as kind of funny. =]
But it might be because the um force could cause her to react in such a way that would damage it.

I'm no expert at eye specifics so i'm sorry I can't be of more help..

Probably want to keep her blood pressure steady. Having sex will raise blood pressure and may cause complications

I would have her discuss it with her doctor. My dad when he had to have surgury on his eye he had to sit face down for two weeks to make sure everything healed right.
