They are the same thing. A military press is normally done with a barbell as opposed to dumbbells.

That is the source of your confusion with the terminology.

dumbbells require greater use of the stabilizer muscles so they are typically more difficult for most to perform with heavy loads. both are compound exercises as the movement involves both the shoulder and elbow joints. where as a lateral raise would be an isolation exercise as only the shoulder joint is used.

regardless if you are training for strength, hypertrophy or fat loss you should include 2 compound exercises (when applicable) for each body part and 1 isolation exercise.

same thing. though when people refer to the military press it is assumed that they used a barbell not DB's. personally, i'd stick with DB's bc they work your stableizer muscles.
