It is always a good idea to be prepared for future contingencies. If you make a will now, you will most likely need to modify it as the years go by. That is alright as well. The most important thing for you, as a young parent, is to nominate your guardian in the event of your untimely demise. If you don't nominate a guardian for your child, then it will become a ward of the court until a court appointed guardian is named. Basically, your child would go into Child Protective Services and foster care. Most of us don't want that so being prepared is good.
As for the financial aspects, a will is only good for handling a small estate. If you have real estate, then a trust is a better option for distributing your estate upon death. Trusts avoid probate procedures whereas a will is a one way ticket to probate court.

It won't make much difference if you only have one child as the estate passes automatically to them anyway- unless you wanted to provide for other relatives such as siblings etc.- but if you have more kids you might need to make a will.
