I watched a small clip on Martha Stewart about cats. The guest on her show said that Siberian cats don't have the protein that other cats do that causes allergies. I'm assuming they have to be purebreds. Also, there are also hypoallergenic cats that you have order and go through a process of getting one. $4,000 for one cat. Here is a link talking about it:

If she doesn't want an expensive and overpriced hairless cat, then there are no cats that won't make your mom's allergies act up. A domestic short hair will be her best bet, but even then it is going to affect her. She can take some medication, you can keep the cat brushed, buy an air purifier, and vacuum and clean regularly and that will all help, but in the end, if you are allergic then you are allergic. Not much you can do about it except live with the symptoms.

If she is allergic to cats she won't be able to get one period. LIke another peron stated, as far as cats go a short haired one would be her best bet, but will still mess with her allergies. Has she gone to the doctor to get prescribed a stronger allergy medicine? My dad uses Zyrtec (I think that's how you spell it), and we have 3 cats running around our house, his allergies don't mess with him that often. Hairless cats are adorable, but probably more expensive ... you have got to work with what you got, a hairless cat may be the only way.

A short-haired cat is less likely to cause her a problem than a a long haired cat. She can get allergy shots if she wants a cat, and is allergic to them.

I am also allergic to cats. I have a short hair cat that I do not allow outdoors, and I have very little problems with my allergies because of her. I have the most problems when I am around outdoor cats. I can't be around them long without sneezing and coughing.

Good luck!

well, it depends if she is allergic to long haired cats or short haired cats. see the saliva of the cat is what people are allergic to, and the saliva is on the cats fur since it cleans itself. so is it allergic to long haired cats or short haired? if it is either or, then you have resolved or answer. if it is both, then hairless is the only way to go, or go to the doctor and get some treatment

Have your mom see a doctor for her cat allergies. It may sound strange, however they can do allergy injections slowly over time to get the body to stop over reacting to the cat.
Lots of luck!
Oh and frequent bathing, dusting and vacuuming proves helpful to an extent.

Try to get a pure breed cat. any mixed animal tends to react more with alergies than anything

And believe it or not, himalayans are known as a cat that most people with alergies do not react to.

Hope this helps!
