Why is it that in every rap song, and all the boys, everywhere, all want an old rifle? Why wouldn't they want an M-16, or a Glock? Is it because they're so rare? Is it because they're armor-piercing, or what?

AKs are not rare. they ar very common.
there is almost no need to ever clean them.
they have like 4 moving parts.
little kick.
pretty accurate.
more likely to kill you then a M16
cheap.

The AK-47 is an extremely reliable weapon, yet inexpensive. It has a fierce reputation.
There have been only 8 minor changes since Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the marvelous weapon in 1947. It is hard to improve perfection. You can drop it in water or remove the inspection plate and throw in some sand, then shake it out and the rifle will still fire.
After the end of the cold war, the world market was flooded with Kalashnikovs from the Russian arsenal.
During both gulf wars, US soldiers were taking AK-47 rifles from dead enemy combatants and using them instead of the M16 because of the AK's reliability.
The design is manufactured today in many countries, including Russia, Communist China, North Korea, Israel, Finland, Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria. Those not made in Russia are counterfeit.
I have owned a genuine AK-47 for 5 years and I love to fire it.
It takes my father's special license for automatic weapons to keep it.
(My father is a gun enthusiast. He taught us about them when we were young. I currently shoot in rifle and handgun tournaments and have won many trophies and other awards)

AK-47s are not rare at all. They are mass produced, comprised of 8 moving parts. Due to the mass production they are cheap to purchase. Also, they are found all over the world and in every continent. The AK-47, brought to you by Mr. Kalishnakov.

They're hardly rare. The AK 47 is the most produced weapon in the world. It has been used in more wars and by more rebels than any other weapon. It is a symbol of rebellions. It is cheap. It is inaccurate. It requires almost no maintenance.

ever shot an m16 or an ak 47? m16 is tempermental an has to be kept clean to work, an ak47 can be drug through the mud and sand, washed with a garden hose and it will still fire. i have owned several ar15s and an ak47, if i was going to war i would much rather be packing the russian ak47 i had over any of the ar15s i owned. the only advantage i saw with the ar was cheap ammunition, that and i made a pile of money when they tried to ban them.

Beacuse they dont jam
Because its the most produced weapon in the world
Because even a child can work it (and in many places in the world its a child that is using it)
Beacuse they fire proper man sized 7.62mm rounds instead of the pittifull 5.56mm rounds used by NATO that are designed not to kill, but wound instead.
AK-47. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfecker in the room, accept no substitutes

Mainly because there are 50-80 million copies estimated just lying around somewhere. Mainly because its MUCH cheaper than the m16 or m4 rifles (which is why so many countries use it- because its a cheap ok rifle)

John T is right, they are not rare, they are rather common and easy to obtain. They are quite effective too, with a good operational rate. It's a standard assault rifle, the M16 is slight better but more rare and expensive. The M4 is kinda junky; I think the AK is better than it.

The Ak-47 is very cheap, like $20 on the world market. If you have simi auto version, you can make it an automatic with a paper clip.

If you were able to ask the hundreds or thousands of dead soldiers from Vietnam why. They would say because they don't jam. In case you didn't know it, one of Vietnam's dirty little secrets is that a lot of the guys that died in Vietnam died because their M-16 jammed on them. When I was in mine jammed consistently, as a matter of fact we called them jam 'o' matics. Besides it is much easier to rhyme Ak than M-16. It's only one syllable you see.
