If you have disability insurance file with your insurance company. Your employer may have either short or long term disability coverage for employees.
If you are looking for Social Security Disability you will need to apply if your disability is expected to last more than 6 months or end in your death. They don't cover the first 6 months at all and decline almost all claims but then you can hire an attorney and fight it. If you win you will get it retro to when you were eligible but will need to pay your attorney.
If you haven't worked enough for SSDI you might be able to get SSI which is for people disabled young or born disabled. It pays about 600 per month.
You aren't disabled if you can do gainful work even if it isn't in your field so it makes it hard to prove a disability.
