How do we know the difference between belief from truth? How do we separate current beliefs from historical distortions? I think this is the jest of the two thoughts. Any comments?

I am not expressing a belief or disbelief in the book. I am only asking about the two thoughts expressed in the TV ad. I personally don't believe in the books story.

It is a lot easier to falsify than to verify; at least statistically.

"What is truth?" said Pilate.

There are, ultimately, facts and opinions. Some things either are or are not. To use the DaVinci code, either the figures in the center of the Last Supper form a V or they don't. In this case it is a fact that they do. Now whether that V was intended by DaVinci to represent the feminine chalice is opinion (at least until someone turns up a DaVinci manuscript that states that the V is meant to represent a chalice or is there to indicate that John had severe body odor).

Historical opinion tends to be the opinion of those in power. The reason the DaVinci code is somewhat compelling is the fact that the church has, by its own admission, tried to surpress heresy over the years and that thoughts have been condemned, documents have been burned, organizations have been destroyed, and people have been killed to accomplish this.

At the moment, no one can tell if the premise of the DaVinci code is true or false. There is too much that ultimately relies on opinion. Perhaps future facts will be discovered and verified that prove or disprove parts of the book. I doubt it, though. The problem is the verification of facts becomes more and more difficult with time. Look at the Kennedy assassination (either one). After less than 50 years people are disputing what were once seen as the facts of the case. They are entering the realm of opinion and most of history is in that realm.

My thoughts on the Da Vinci Code DVD was how the heck did Tom Hanks get that role when the guy was portrayed as a good looking man in the book?

Most people did not take the DVC seriously. It's a book that was made into a less-than-stellar movie. Angels and Demons was better anyway.

It's called propaganda. Believers know God is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. All people know that there is a God. Those who reject him develop myriad ways to keep from having to face the fact of their sin which separates them from God. That's where concepts like the Da Vinci Code come into play. If ungodly people can convince enough people that their beliefs are distortions, or redefine the word truth to mean anything that is empirically proveable, then they can feel they've created a hedge against the thing that they are denying. It is here that they are condemned, not wanting to come into the light for fear their sin will be exposed.

a belief is based on either truth or faith. Researching and learning as much as we can about documented history and make an educated decision. Don't base beliefs on movies or TV.

That is the problem with history and written record...it is all a matter of perspective.

A person needs to go beyond the surface and find out what the selection of facts are and use their reason to make a decision appropriate to themselves and their lives.........that is the other problem no one looks beyond the surface....

On the very first page of the book it is noted as fiction, the places are real, but the book is fiction. i was very sad to see that in the movie their was no disclaimer to that effect.

Don't dwell on these things...........think on whatever is lovely, pure, praiseworthy, etc in Philippians 4:4ff

This movie was made to try to confuse and deter people from coming to the truth.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but I have the Holy Spirit within me who is more than able to discern for me.

Well I see it like this. The DaVinci code is labeled as Fiction. I see it as fiction. Fiction is made up and not true.
