Dear Boss,

Please accept my resignation as of July 1, 2007. I feel I have learned a lot from you and this company over the past eight years but have recently been offered an opportunity that I cannot pass up. Thank you for the opportunities you have given me.

Make sure you sign it and put the current date at the top.

To whom it may concern,
Working here at Acme Widgets has been an memorable experience. However the gut burning coffee, the insipid managerial culture and that dirty toilet smell that permeates the office and staff lunchroom has driven me to desperate measures.
I have just accepted a position as a new study subject for an anti-depression drug company.
Please accept my resignation and feel free to keep my troll doll pen collection as a parting gift to my co-workers with my warmest esteem.
Sincerely yours,

Do not thank them or say anything in the letter. They keep that and could use it against you at some point.

To HR/*boss you hate*/whoever's in charge:

My final day at Widget Corporation will be *date*.

Sincerely,
--You

That's all you need, the thank yous and such can be taken care of in person. Never leave a paper trail.

Good luck!
