Ron D - a monk invented champagne. Many monks make beer to pay for expenses.

Have you ever had their beer? It's heavenly.

I don't presume to know how monks spend all their time, but I do know that most manufacture of alcohol by monks (e.g., Benedictine brandy) is for money-making purposes, to help them support themselves. I don't know of any order who produces beer, but maybe there is.

To some degree, I believe (hope?) that imbibing is not sin in itself. The bible says to not be drunk.

Not sure wherre you heard the allusion to alcohol beign the devil's best friend. But it IS true that alcohol, possibly more than any other single weakness, has done harm to people, particularly when abused.

If you're going to try to "catch them (Christians) up" in some sort of conflict of attitudes.behavior, you need to work a little harder at it, to find anything approximating a real conflict.

Alcohol is only evil for the Calvinists and puritans - they were pretty conservative. They were the ancestors of todays right wing evangelicals. Monks made liquor to make money. Those abbeys cost a lot to build and heat.

Strange that you would say the devils best friend. Must be your interpretation of alcohol because that is the first I've heard it like that. Monks making champage and beer?? Where do you get your information??

It is obvious that they want to be devil's best friend too (apply only to the monks who make those liquors). They should teach others not to get drunk not vise versa.

Hey Jesus made some wine at a Bible as well.
Alcohol consumed responsibly is not a sin. Being drunk however is another matter all together.

Anyone whose ever been drunk has said or done something that they regret at some point or another.

You forgot the Benedictine Monks, who make, well, Benedictine. Yummy.

Not only do they make it, but champagne was INVENTED by a monk.

But that's a protestant saying, and protestants are usually more anti-alcohol than Catholics.
