I assume you're not a member of an airline lounge. My suggestion is that you check to see the price of becoming one for the day. For instance, American Airlines lets you use their lounges for a 24 hour period if you purchase a one day pass that used to be $50 or so. Most airlines have that. Definitely worth it. Course.. if you're in a fun city with good public transportation you could consider taking the subway into town to walk around, see a movie, shop, etc..

Face it, there is nothing to do in an airport for 8 hrs right. WRONG. The best thing for you to do is share stories with other airliners. Ask them where are they from, have they been to the city before, what destinations they are planning to see. If that dosen't work then you could place a bet on sleeping or reading. Or you could just bring a laptop or something. Call in to see if there are any delays at the airport also. DUH?

Leave for 6 hours. Experience a little of whatever city the airport is in or near.

buy your own plane. :) it makes everything so much easier. you could go anywhere you want at any given time. but for now at the airport you can sleep, (especially best if your going somewhere with a different time zone) read a book, listen to music, and if you play video games you could invest in a psp and bring it along on long trips. have a good flight!

whatever you dont drink and get drunk. they wont let you on the plane and youll be stuck there longer. explore the airport. walk around. go out to eat. get a book or some magazines. just relax. there are really a lot of things to do now a days at an airport. get shoes shined. a haircut. the possibilities are endless.

What to do? Where's your imagination? Ok, I have several suggestions. You could always read (blah). You can walk around the airport and when people aren't looking, unzip they're bags halfway. Bring condemns and put them on people's luggage carts or in their bags if the bag can be opened. Dart around the entire airport suspiciously singing Mission Impossible theme song really loud.

If it's overnight, sleep, but on top of valuables such as your wallet, etc. During the day, I'd explore the stores, watch the 'planes, read newspapers, drink coffee and call friends. You'd be surprised how fast the time can go - this has happened to me too.

I fly free on a Continental standy pass and have had to wait up to 17 hours before (when it's really bad), and I usually just sleep. That or read. Sleeping is difficult though, because wherever there are people nearby they tend to walk by talking on their phones as loud as possible.
