Find something you know about and feel other people have a misconception.
An example might be a place like the desert where you live and you hear others saying things that aren't true about it like nothing is growing in the desert or no animals can live there or it never rains or it is always hot. If you lived there you would know about little flowers and big cactus and rabbits, road runners and snakes and that it does rain on rare occasions and is cold at night.
It can be almost anything where you keep hearing people say things that aren't true and you can show the truth and prove it.

I'm not sure what you should use as a topic. But the structure can be done like this: Write an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement on how the two things are similar and different (The items are similar in this/these ways(s), but different in this/these way(s)). Then, start showing all the points where they are similar (give a point and give example(s) for the misconception and the reality. Then spend a couple of sentences (or more) analyzing how they are similar. Repeat this process for other points. Then transition into the differences. Do this in the same way as you did the similarities--describe something about the misconception and something about the reality, and then analyze how they are different, and repeat for other points. Remember that everything will have to be united with the thesis, so don't point out everything, just what fits the thesis.

umm i had to write a compare contrast paper two semesters ago and did pretty good..umm maybe pick like a form of stereotyping in your school, or community..then compare the misconceptions with what is considered "the norm"--for example, if i choose a paper on brunettes---i would choose a few misconceptions like--blondes have more fun--and compare it with facts...what i did what start each paragraph with a misconception--then compared it to the truth and then summed it up at the end..i hope i helped instead of confuse you more:(

Racial prejudice would be a good topic, there's lots to say about the history of slavery and stuff.
