First, how could one "beat" the poem? Secondly, unless you live in Iraq or Afghanistan, US soldiers aren't protecting you. We Are Already Free, and nobody in Iraq or Afghanistan can take that away. OUr troops are protecting the US Government's interests and NOTHING MORE. Should they be villified, HELL NO. They made a promise to go wherever the Puppet-In-Chief sends them. They are told they are fighting for freedom, but that is a necessary evil (brainwashing our soldiers) because a normal human would refuse to kill. I agree that they (both my brothers are in Active Duty, my older in the Navy, my younger is a Sgt. in the Army, currently in Iraq) NEED TO COME HOME NOW!!!

Not trying to beat, but to put some other ones:

Twas The Night Before Christmas,
He Lived All Alone,
In A One Bedroom House
Made Of Plaster And Stone.

I Had Come Down The Chimney
With Presents To Give,
And To See Just Who
In This Home Did Live.

I Looked All About,
A Strange Sight I Did See,
No Tinsel, No Presents,
Not Even A Tree.

No Stocking By Mantle,
Just Boots Filled With Sand,
On The Wall Hung Pictures
Of Far Distant Lands.

With Medals And Badges,
Awards Of All Kinds,
A Sober Thought
Came Through My Mind.

For This House Was Different,
It Was Dark And Dreary,
I Found The Home Of A Soldier,
Once I Could See Clearly.

The Soldier Lay Sleeping,
Silent, Alone,
Curled Up On The Floor
In This One Bedroom Home.

The Face Was So Gentle,
The Room In Such Disorder,
Not How I Pictured
A United States Soldier.

Was This The Hero
Of Whom I'd Just Read?
Curled Up On A Poncho,
The Floor For A Bed?

I Realized The Families
That I Saw This Night,
Owed Their Lives To These Soldiers
Who Were Willing To Fight.

Soon Round The World,
The Children Would Play,
And Grownups Would Celebrate
A Bright Christmas Day.

They All Enjoyed Freedom
Each Month Of The Year,
Because Of The Soldiers,
Like The One Lying Here.

I Couldn't Help Wonder
How Many Lay Alone,
On A Cold Christmas Eve
In A Land Far From Home.

The Very Thought
Brought A Tear To My Eye,
I Dropped To My Knees
And Started To Cry.

The Soldier Awakened
And I Heard A Rough Voice,
"Santa Don't Cry,
This Life Is My Choice;

I Fight For Freedom,
I Don't Ask For More,
My Life Is My God,
My Country, My Corps."

The Soldier Rolled Over
And Drifted To Sleep,
I Couldn't Control It,
I Continued To Weep.

I Kept Watch For Hours,
So Silent And Still
And We Both Shivered
From The Cold Night's Chill.

I Didn't Want To Leave
On That Cold, Dark, Night,
This Guardian Of Honor
So Willing To Fight.

Then The Soldier Rolled Over,
With A Voice Soft And Pure,
Whispered, "Carry On Santa,
It's Christmas Day, All Is Secure."

One Look At My Watch,
And I Knew He Was Right.
"Merry Christmas My Friend,
And To All A Good Night."
(can replace "soldier" with another service branch)

It Has Always Been The Soldier

It is the soldier,
not the President,
who gives us democracy.

It is the soldier,
not the Congress,
who takes care of us.

It is the soldier,
not the reporter,
who has given us Freedom of Press.

It is the soldier,
not the poet,
who has given us Freedom of Speech.

It is the soldier,
not the campus organizer,
who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate.

It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag
that allows the protester to burn the flag.

A Marine's Final Inspection, author unknown
The Marine stood and faced God Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining Just as brightly as his brass."Step forward Marine, How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?"
The Marine squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here,
They never wanted me around Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod
As the Marine waited quietly, For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward Marine, You've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell."

I live in a country where I have no say,
I can't disagree then go out and play,
I live in a country where I'm not allowed to dream,
I can't voice my opinion or step out of the seam,
We all walked in line and said the same prayers,
We jumped through hoops that were only snares,
This is the kind of life some people lead
but hear in America, we are free.

Thanks to a volunteer military. No one is forced to go and fight but I thank God in heaven for those that do so I don't have to. And for those of you that say we are in no danger from anyone in Iraq or Afghanistan let me remind you that we have been attacked on our own soil by the same insurgents that are now in these countries. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Maybe next time your office building will have an airplane ram into it or a bomb blow up near it. Then you can tell me that we should give up in Iraq and Afghanistan. The poeple there deserve the same freedoms we have. Great question, thanks Lois.

Hows this?

Bless the troops as they have been put in harms way. Let them come home safe, to there wives, children, family, and friends. May they live a healthy fruitful life without effects of what they were put through. Yes they signed up on their own and were not forced into the military, but it is due to our horrible president that has put them there. So may they live to fight another day, may they come home and be done with this war.

The war is not in our backyards, we do not live in fear of terror. I think all of those people who believe that we are being kept safe forgot that before 9/11 one of the largest "TERRORIST" attack on U.S. soil was by an american, did you forget Oklahoma? If we are to be in fear of something it is our problem with our borders, I do not just mean the southern boarders, also the ones that come off containers in the harbor... So if you want our military to protect us set them at our borders!

Beautiful! I agree, I think people forget that they volunteered to join, they are doing it because they want to. Otherwise why would you have so many soldiers and Marines volunteering to go, or extending their enlistment so that they can go back?

As for our freedom, we have that freedom because of our military. We have been hit once before, don't even think that it can't happen again. If you would rather that we fight them here, in our backyards, so that you can feel that your military is protecting you, then I hope you live completely across the country from me, because I certainly don't want it.

Thank you to all of our military, and thank you for doing what you do for the rest of us!

Indeed, you are a very lucky person because you have a
government that sees to the welfare of its citizens. And
your government in their desire to protect democracy has
also made possible sending in troops to other countries
to help in containing terrorism which has brought numerous
sufferings not only to their own people but to other people
as well.

I think people forget that. Another thing we need to remember is, that the troops wanted to join the military and knew what was involved before they went, they are not punks. God bless the U.S.!!

Lois, I just have to say your compassion is so overwhelming. I feel the same in my heart as you, but I have never been able to express it as well as you. Just keep on getting this stuff out to our troop. They need to know they have the love and support from home. Thanks for letting us be a part of expressing it with you. Excellent writing.
